Livery Despair!

just wanted to say that i had a mare @ schooling livery @ elms farm in costock & was v impressed - nice set up & YO was very helpful

a friend of mine has data on most of the Leics yard - pm & i can pass on a contact detail

No comparison!! My horses welfare is far more important than trinkets. I would definitely move as turnout is sooooo paramount in my opinion. Why can't there be the ideal field, all the above PLUS unlimited turnout. Oh to come up on the lottery!!

I think you need to move, if your friend cannot offer you any assistance then what would happen if you got sick who would look after your horse?

If you have horse transport is there a yard you could go to with a less perfect school but within travelling distance of a school you could hire a few times a week, presuming you can hack at the weekend or are out competiting then.

is Aylesford too far? theres a new-ish livery I believe in a purpose built stable barn there. 60x30m outdoor manege and access to aylesford xc course :). unsure about prices grazing etc. Land renting wise you could always approach someone in the area who appears to have ungrazed fields and a manege and see if you could rent off them? they might not have necessarily considered it but be happy for a bit of extra money? unsure about the insurance regarding this tho would assume you would have to take responsibility for insurance if you were renting. :)

There are so many farmers with spare bits of fields and the odd empty building - all leisure riders should think about using local farms if they can.

Won't be suitable for the competitors who can't live without livery services or floodlights or schools (what's wrong with a corner of a field?)

Farmers are struggling just now, and it is tough to diversify. So an extra chunk of cash each month often makes the difference to the family's finances.

And livery yards need a sharp reality check - as do insurers and so many others in the horse industry.

Well each to their own really but for me the fact that he is a competition horse is irrelevant, however he is extremely quirky and difficult (no...really!), he's 18hh and I ride completely on my own at 6 or 7pm at night so during the winter a dark field would be far from suitable and I think I would be an idiot to even try. If I was so lucky as to have spare time during daylight hours to ride I wouldnt mind schooling in a small field once in a while as I did with my previous eventer. Another problem is soundness, a tall warmblood that is big moving is far more likely to have leg problems when ridden on a hard surface 6 times a week.

exactly ive been let down, the silly YO promised me that there would always be someone to care for him daily but apparently not. There is a school opposite but again its the care that im worried abotu really, i think what i was hoping for was maybe some new liveries that might like a few pennies in return for turning him out but this was a while ago and there are no new liveries!

No turnout is a deal breaker for me, winter is stressful enough without wondering if youre going to get your head stoved in by a nutjob horse who'd be fine if on regular turnout :D
My big lad always dunged in the automatic drinker, wasnt impressed with it at all.
Get a good set of waterproofs and a place with an outdoor school and lights that can provide livery services if reqd.
Good luck
