Hi, I have heard of it but that's as far as it goes I am afraid. If you want north Bristol that's more my forte so feel free to pm me if you want north
I've only heard of it too by name and again I'm the wrong side of town. The only thing I do know about it though is she was on our local TV recently (assuming it's the same person) as she's hoping to get a licence to keep zebras there
J2 - Not if they're kept in small pens which is what I saw on the programme but it did look like it was filmed during the depths of winter just when they'd arrived. I'm assuming (hoping) she will eventually be able to keep them in very large fenced fields but what they were put in when they first arrived I thought was too small and not how I think even captive zebras in this country should live. I also was concerned about the fact that she's going to take in zebras which other zoos/safari parks can no longer look after due to health problems in the hope that she can get them back to good health and "re-house" them - with the laws and licences for wild animals in this country it's not everyone that can take a zebra off your hands just like that. http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/bristol/hi/people_and_places/nature/newsid_8530000/8530656.stm
All credit to her if they have a better life with her than from being in a zoo or wildlife park but I'd be amazed if she'll be able to do it and afford it without making money out of them somehow. Maybe I'm just an old cynic! My other objection is the wording that was used in the article and the item on the news, conservation and protection were quoted. It's really not about "protecting" the species - zebras don't need protected in this country - protecting the various zebra species involves proper conservation measures out on the African plains where they belong. Just my opinion.

Hello, after reading your post with interest let me take a few moments to clarify a few things. Firstly I am licenced to have any wild equid under my Dangerous Wild Animal Licence, which is monitored by the Council and an expert which happens to be the vet at Bristol Zoo. I am also a member of BIAZA and I have institutional support from both Bristol Zoo and Longleat. I have been planning this project for 2 years and have visited most of the UK collections with Plains zebra and also been out to Africa. I am involved with a conservation project in Africa and although you may not seem to think it is important to conserve the species in this country, it is vital for an education and conversation purpose to conserve the different sub species. My zebras are kept in runs and have a community hard standing and a large well fenced paddock. However what you saw when we were filming was them in their runs as they had not been with me very long and for their own safety we were taking things slowly with introductions. Zebras also need to be looked after well according to the weather, as they are not native to our climate, even though my zebras are all captive bred within Europe. If given the choice on a miserable cold rainy day you will find them in their stables not out in the paddock.
To be able to not only gain a DWA Licence but to also be able to get to the position of being given the zebras takes a lot of hard work and total dedication and yes believe it or not for no monetary rewards! I can afford to keep them and have taken everything into account.
As for the rest of the comments about my livery yard, well everyone is entitled to their own opinion, just remember there are always two sides to every story!!!
I went to look round here quite a long time ago and from what I saw I'd say the comments on the other site are probably unfair and all from one person who is holding a grudge.
It wasn't the right yard for me for various reasons, not least that from the city centre traffic out along that road in rush hour is v busy.
It is certainly worth a look round, but my biggest bit of advice to you would be to drive to all the yards you look at through the rush hour traffic - it will definitely change your perceptions about which yards are worth having your horse at....
Yep, kept mine there for 3 yrs - good facilities, well-run, excellent value for money, 2 huge arenas, mix of competition riders and happy hackers, encouraging and supportive atmosphere, only downside for me was on v busy road, but I believe you may be able to hack thro fields now to get onto quiet lanes... I'd recommend it. Have a look round and see what you think.
