Hi there :)

I am moving to Lincoln next week and looking for a DIY yard in Lincoln, can anyone give me any recommendations?

Preferably birchwood area, but will consider travelling further for a good one!

Thanks :)

Welcome to my part of the world!

There's Bruces DIY that's down Hykeham way, Danethorpe still do it I think, that's on the A46 between Lincoln and Newark, and Blackmoor Farm (if they still do livery) off Doddington Road, that's close to Birchwood.

Oh, there's a place off the Skellingthorpe roundabout but can't remember it's name...!

Was speaking to a lass last week while I was shopping in Newark, she waxed lyrical about Danethorpe, where she keeps her horse - so much so I wished I was nearer! And it didn't seem expensive.

Ditto why are you moving here :)

There is also livery at nettleham, straight up the a46, takes no longer than 10mins from birchwood.

Decoy farm is your closest, if you dont mind 24/7 grazing, the common is cheap and popular, it would not be my first choice, but would help until you found some where else :)

Welcome to Lincoln

Can you actually ride them if they are kept on the common?

Yep, you are just not meant to earn a living from them - riding school for example.

Got lots of friends on the West Common (3 in all for those who don't know, south, west and what they call the cow paddle) and the through the Horse Commons Association, you can get your name down to rent a stable in the old racecourse stables...

Apologies if you know this all ready!

No I didnt know. Live close enough to know you can keep them on the common... where can you ride them... is it not a bit limited by the bypass?

another thing I have always wondered... how are these horses actually fed? I'm guessing that hay/haylage can't be put out on the common!

In the winter, the owners club together and buy hay. Those that need hard feed get it.

There are not many rules tbh, they have to be vetted before they go on, and they have a hoof branded with a number once a year, just to prove they are legally on there, but that is about it.

I find this really interesting - I drive down Carholme most days and often wonder about all these horses out together, I never knew that so thank you.

Welcome to Lincoln OP - sorry no help with livery yards!

Interesting. I never knew that. Often drive past the commons and wondered whose the horses were etc.

I would vote for Danethorpe too, although I don't keep my horse there I go there with daughter to the XC course, and know a few people who do livery there and haven't heard anything bad about it.

I am on a private yard, and although there are spaces, I am not able to pass on the tel no as it's word of mouth and people the YO knows etc.

Hope you find somewhere good.
