Hi guys hope it’s ok to post. Question to yard owners/managers regarding waiting list for your yard as well as general opinion on the subject from everyone else.

I’m at the yard I’m quite happy about, yo is great, people are great, it’s very friendly and we are having blast together but I’m outgrowing it in terms i need bigger school(our one is tiny) with lights to prepare for next winter(recent one was tough) Yo is getting old and I’m finding myself(others too) spending lots of time at the yard doing maintenance work from fences in my horses field to levelling and harrowing sand school. Last year yo bought new surface after some if us told him school is unusable and unsafe and we were expected to spread and level new school surface which we did by hands and pitchforks and it took a group of 4 people around 3 hours per day over 2-3 days which was fine I thought then but it was hard manual labour. Not to mention that it is hard to get to use the school now as people that didn’t help with it are in it all the time, booking for individual use month in advance for pretty much everyday of the week at peek times and that’s not for lessons, it just to ride on their own so they don’t have to share. School surface is sand and carpet fibre which in summer hot days gets really dusty and when we asked if he could wet it with his tractor and tank he blandly refused due to lack of time and suggested we should do it with hose. Hose isn’t long enough to reach it so we would have to chip in and buy. If we want a jump we all have to chip in for second hand jumps and poles ect. Like I’ve mentioned I’m finding myself spending awful amount of time at the yard away from my family and that’s not even tending to my horses. It’s to do maintenance and general cleaning. It’s starting getting to me and I hate to say I’m getting quite annoyed.

Im on the waiting list for another yard and I’ve been waiting for nearly two years and I’m getting quite inpatient now. There was a point where I thought we are moving but someone who lost the horse at that yard last minute decided not to give up riding and got another horse and I had apologies from yard manager so I’m still waiting. She offered me grass livery as a gesture of goodwill and as apology even though they don’t have grass livery service there but I need stables. It is highly reputable yard with long waiting list. Maintenance gets done, their school gets harrowed regularly And wetted in dry weather, i know few people at this yard who moved from my current yard. I just want to be at the yard spending time with my horses not cleaning and doing maintenance to facilities I’m paying for. Yard I’m at is not cheap yard it’s in average price bracket so really I don’t get a deal.

How does waiting list work? I’ve been near at the top as I’m in touch with other yard manager. We know of each other in horsey world and we’ve got each other’s number so once in a while I’ll text her asking if there’s any stable coming up which she replies not yet but I will let you know. I understand that if yard owners/managers having a good word put in for someone or someone knows someone who’s looking to move they can jump the queue but am I correct? I’m kind of getting to the point where I feel spiteful toward current situation at my yard because I do have family and where normally takes me less time to do my chores and ride I’m spending majority of the weekends on working parties arranged by yo. I come home absolutely exhausted. Yes there’s cakes and tea which is lovely but I feel we shouldn’t have to do that. Yard consist of around 25 liveries and only 5 of us does it. I feel guilty for not doing it therefore I’m doing it.

How does waiting list works and how it is with your maintenance at the yard?

Thank you

I understand why you're feeling fed up with your yard. Is there a third yard which might be a stop gap until a vacancy comes up at your yard of choice. Is there a 'yard odd job person' role at your current yard - if not then would the yard owner appoint one to take on maintenance jobs rather than lose clients. Sorry you're in this situation, fingers crossed something comes up soon.

You should have took the grass livery, you would then have been on site and it would have made it far harder for people to queue jump.

Unless you have a horse that has medical/behavioral issues that requires stabling then I cannot see why not having one would be an issue.

Also have a word with the current yard owner about booking of the school, ask that booking for sole use is restricted to once per week and or for lessons only.

I need a stable for medical reasons unfortunately.

How honest is the yard owner at the one you’ve been waiting for?? 2 years is a long time to have no spaces…do they genuinely have no space? One yard near us rarely has spaces but the owner said to me that “for some people we never have a space” which made me feel that they are being selective on who they want to go there….unsurprisingly we chose not to go on the list there as I didn’t like her attitude!

What do the people who are already there say?

I’d be looking for a 3rd option personally as it sounds like a space may never come up at the one you are on the list for or be prepared to be on grass livery for a few months? I did that once at a yard and we had a stable within months x

She’s pretty honest I think. Lady before me was waiting around 18 months for her and lady few years ago 2.5 years.

The only way to hammer it home to the current yard owner that you are not happy to do his maintenance is to vote with your feet, and not do it - but it will involve everyone who currently does it, to not do it.

I am very lucky in that most of my liveries all chip in to help when something needs doing - but I don't expect them to, and am very grateful when they do. Ultimately, it is my responsibility to get things done.

Waiting list wise - I usually have one, and whenever one person leaves, I approach the first person on the list, then work my way down.

I have the same approach. I vet people really carefully, and keep my ear close to the ground re potential liveries. Doesn't mean I have a bad attitude - just that I want people who will fit in with my existing liveries, suit the yard dynamic, and not cause any drama

Livery yards that are not selective tend to be the ones with massive drama.
Ive been on quite a few yards that would “ never have a space” for some and they have been the best yards i’ve ever been on.

We are on a very selective livery, hence why we currently have 6 stables empty.
We vet anyone interested. The YO isn’t involved in the horsey world anymore, so she trusted me to decide if people are the right fit. She always said she’d rather empty stables and no hassle than a full yard and constant grief.

Sorry should have been clearer I didn’t like her attitude for other reasons not just because of her waiting list! She was a major control freak and I didn’t want her dictating what my horse ate which is what she said. She also has no winter turnout whatsoever.

Totally understand vetting potential liveries, I was just thinking does she have a reason to not have a space? But it sounds like that’s normal for her yard then. When was the last time you physically went over and asked about space? Rather than messaging?

A livery manager can manage the waiting list however they want I'm afraid. In the last two years I have been bumped above everyone else twice, once because I was on site and my horse was being badly managed by someone else and the second time because the yard knew me from before.

I've also tried to get into a yard which has no wait list and you get a space if one is free the day you call, and another that told me they would call as soon as they had a space and didn't, though I know others went there.

I echo the others, you need to stop doing the work, and move somewhere else in the interim if possible.

I don't know if this would be possible for you financially, but could you offer to pay a decent deposit to the new yard to hold the next stable that comes available?

A lot of yards will go on recommendation rather than follow a list in order. I know I’ve jumped the list due to a personal recommendation and the fact my yard is closing so it’s urgent. Sadly only one space at the moment and I have two horses but I’ve taken it and am currently paying for that as well as my current livery hoping another comes up there or in one of the other yards close by. I also only got on my current yard through a friend of a friend as they never advertised or took random people that popped in on the off chance.

A couple of friends have got in on another yard next door because there were mare spaces that came up. A friend of mine runs it so I know I have the first gelding space that comes up.

I've queue jumped the waiting list because I knew someone. People would rather have recommendations or word of mouth rather than an unknown from a list.

Agree with not doing the maintenance

Many of the yards I've been on have not allowed people to book the school for single use at peak times however if yours is going to stick to this, then what's stopping you booking it several weeks in advance

^^ this. Our current and my last YO asks the liveries about anyone who enquires and if we aren't sure or say no its a no and they get told there isn't space. Like Criso I've also queue jumped through being recommended
