Hey

If I get my place at Exeter uni I will be looking to move my pony down there.. Does anyone know of any yards near Exeter that can be accessed by bus or train? This is essential as I wont have a car. Preferably DIY/Assisted DIY/part livery. I'd prefer a small, quiet yard. Must have a school and good hacking!

Thanks

Hi there, I think quite a few Uni students use Upton Pyne Equestrian Centre as it is the right side of Exeter for the Uni. They do DIY, assisted DIY, part & Full Livery, have a nice big outdoor school and a horse walker. I don't think there is much off road hacking but the lanes are fairly quiet. I think they have a website if you google it. Rollestone is also DIY and closer to the Uni, but .... There are quite a few livery yards around Exeter, some better than others - not mentioning any names!! ;)

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but I too brought my beasties with me when I came to uni and we've now lived in Exeter for nearly ten years. For various reasons (horses unsettled, commuting distance, number of horses etc) we've been at or viewed and re-viewed most of the major yards here. The ones that tend to be most popular are Hitts Barton, the Glebe, Goatlake, Rollestone, Upton Pine and Newhall.

For indoor and outdoor schools look at: Hitts, the Glebe, & Newhall. (Goatlake has an indoor lunging arena as well as an outdoor school).

For just outdoor: Rollestone and Upton Pine.

The ones with the best hacking (i.e. most off-road as well as on-road) are: the Glebe, Newhall and Rollestone. But all have some of both.

There are a handful of smaller yards around and a couple of riding schools that sometimes do DIY livery too.

My advice would be to ring around and visit the ones you like the sound of. In all honesty, everywhere has a reputation of some kind and nowhere is perfect. I'm at Rollestone at the moment (it's 10 minutes from my house!) and it's no better or worse than any of the others. They're all different and it will come down to what you and your horse(s) find suits and whether you gel with the people there.

The only real word of caution I would give you is that the Glebe doesn't really have the facilities to accommodate livery mares any more.

Good luck in your search and feel free to PM if you'd like any more details.

jhoward where are you?!!!!

I don't know whether Oaklands do livery? Their a big riding school on the big roundabout coming into Exeter on the Eastern side; have been there for years and I bought my first pony from them in 1973!!! He was a little cracker. But sorry don't know if they do livery at all.

I will PM you with some thoughts on where you might best avoid!!

Smaller yards tend to be advertised locally or by word of mouth.

There's Town & Country Supplies (now owned by Countrywise/Countrywide??) out at Broadclyst which is a few miles east of Exeter and they've got a notice board up with details of livery etc.

You could post them a postcard-size advert saying you're looking for livery and that might be a start? (I don't know how much it is to put something up on their board).

Oaklands do livery, so that would work. You could look also at Lower Haldon livery yard and Hyperion, both just outside of Exeter near Kennford, I'm thinking you could bus there very quickly, and the hacking will be good (Google Haldon Forest). Look at the train timetables too - it might be possible to get to a yard at say Crediton or Dawlish very quickly by train, but I would think that DIY will be a struggle if you don't have a car.

You do realise that the University has it's own RC!? http://au.exeter.ac.uk/riding/

Hi Verient, I am in Exeter, I know there are a few small yards around Ide, that is where we are, but that is the other side of Exeter from the Uni. There is a bus that goes into Ide, but not very often. I do know there are a few smaller yards around the Uni side of Eeter, I don't know names but a women I often talk to in the local shop has had her horses at 2 yards out that way! Unfortunately you often have to get into the area to find the smaller yards! When I moved to Exeter I went to the tack shop Farmer's Friend and got my yard from the noticeboard there (Other places you could do this at are Rollestone Feeds - dif. place to the livery yard, Orchard Nursery, and Town and Country).

I looked at Rollestone but they only had grass livery available when I looked, not sure they have stables available atm. I don't know if Hilltop riding school do livery, but that is very near to Uni if they do. I know of the people who own Upton Pyne (they boxed my boy), they were really nice. Oaklands RS does livery but not DIY, it is the other side of Exeter, but easily accessible by bus.

Good luck getting a place, I am a student at Exeter, did my UG there and didn't want to leave so am now a masters student :)
