Livery or home

And I thought I was lucky my OH was happy for us to put in 2 stables and a feed room !! I love being at home although I don't ride - me and my boy go for mooches down the lane and round and about in hand when we fancy it. But there is so much to be said for morning jobs in pj's at weekend and colic watch is much much nicer at home. Although if I have the bedroom window open mine comes and shouts at me for breakfast at stupid o'clock in the summer, and comes and watches the children on the trampoline over the garden fence which freaks out their friends as its about a foot away !
 
I cannot believe how lucky I am, I never imagined this would happen to me.

I'm going to have cameras in my boxes so I can check them from the house without having to go outside.
 
Sounds amazing. I am going the other way. After a muddy winter with no school and no one to hack out with we are moving to livery this weekend! Kids ponies staying at home though so will still have something to look at over the fence!
 
Had mine at home 14yrs and novelty well and truly worn off especially after this Winter. I dream of full livery on a decent yard (which I used to have), no more traumas of who will look after them if I want a night or two away, people to hack with /chat with/disagree with (!) and an end to the soul destroying relentless loneliness of it all. Apart from that it's lovely to see them when looking out the kitchen window. ��
 
We are about a week/ten days away from finishing our yard. We moved here in May - plenty of land but didn't get planning in time to put stables etc in place before winter so girls have been in livery since Jan (one was there to be backed). I am really lucky, 3 stables, tack room and hay barn (size of two stables) being put in and a 40x20 - it's not an indoor but I'm so excited and can't wait to have them home. Fields are in front of house so all v easy.
 
If you have transport and someone trusted who will care for your horse when you are away I would say that home is definitely the best. I had to swiftly move from livery to home after my yard was bought for houses to be built on. It wasnt the best setup, I had more a large garden than land and one stable was quickly built ! Luckily I had understanding neighbours and only one horse. Now I have more space and I would never go back to livery. I like having instant access and can keep a much better eye on her, albeit I do work from home so its ideal for me. I don't feel lonely at all, to me its far better than enduring yard politics, though my old yard was good. You can't beat being on hand what with horses being as unpredictable as they are!

I think one of the best things about them being at home is when they need that extra care or something is brewing and you need to keep watch, it is so much easier to do hourly checks from the warmth of your home! Cameras in stables even better.
 
If you don't need the social side of the yard and have transport then I can't see a downside. I moved to a new area to have them at home do no horsey friends to hack with or persuade me to go out competing etc and without getting out and about no way to really meet local horse people. Doesn't sound like that would be an issue for you though, and on balance Id still say having them at home is definitely preferable.
 
For many years I did both, I kept a space on a livery yard so I could us the grazing, stable, arena but had a stable and small turnout paddock at home or rented extra grazing. This cut my costs and gave me flexibility.
