I think it really depends on your circumstances. The property you have, the facilities, hacking, what you like to do with your horses, what support you have etc.
I’m in a very horsey location, my neighbour has horses so we hack together, I have local friends who ride and I have a local groom to help out when I’m away.
It is time consuming, costly and more work than people might think BUT in saying all of that, I love it. I love being able to see my horses any time I want, being the person who does everything for them and I ride more now than I used to. I also do things I ever did on a livery yard - mess about in the fields in summer riding bareback, playing silly games, going on picnic rides etc
