I am having serious brain-ache and am rather embarrassed to have to ask this, but.....

I have a few diy liveries on the farm and used to ask for payment at the end of the month, but having had one do a 'moonlight flit' without paying the bill a few years ago, changed it to what I term as a month in advance - ie being billed on date of arrival, with the bills then being issued at 4 weekly intervals from that date.

I now have another livery leaving and was due a bill on the 19th Jan, with the months notice being up on the 16th Feb. Should I still be charging for this period?

You can tell figures are not my strong point!!

Yes, if you've now moved this livery to paying for the month ahead a bill is due now and will be their final payment. If they are paying in retrospect then they will owe you this bill and another prior to leaving.

Yes, the bill that you will give them on the 19th of january will be in advance for the period from 19th January to 16th February (when they leave) so it may be a few days less than a full month which you might want to take into consideration - but given it's just a few days they might not worry about it.

Yes.

Due to a couple in the past trying to do a runner, I always took 2 months livery up front - 1 month for livery, the other payment as deposit, which was returned when they left.

This happend to me when I was in County Durham... when the yo died his sister took on the farm, and they were in such a mess financially I did not have the heart to ask for my deposit back.... I was moving back to the Midlands - I must be mad, but we are still friends and I see them about once a year.

to make your bills easier.
Bill monthly instead of 4 weekly.

You could do as our yard does and charge the livery in advance and the extras, haylate etc at the end of the month with the livery bring paid by standing order on the first of each month. The extras could then be paid cash or check when billed

I would worry about a few days! If i'm not there, i'm not paying for a service i'm not using! That's like paying for items at the supermarket you aren't going to take off the shelf - you wouldn't do it. It's a business, not a charity.

I've liveried at different yards - one asked for a weeks livery in advance and a weeks deposit and then paid weekly or monthly for livery and supplies as billed.

I liveried more recently at a yard who demanded 4 weeks up front and billed weekly. I got royally screwed over by her and never got my 4 weeks £140 money back. I'd done nothing wrong, no bills outstanding, there was no damage, she was just a Grade A greedy c**t.

The place i'm at now is brill - it's more of an ad hoc basis. My livery I pay weekly by BACS and when my supplies hit about £100 (which is around 3-4weeks) I draw cash out and drop it by owner. But we're a small yard (8 owners all with 2 horses each) and we're friendly. A good feeling about a person speaks volumes (and history of following up where they came from and why!) and we're lucky we get to function this way.

We pay a month in advance, the livery is due on 1st of each month. We work it out i.e. £25 p.w x 52 = £1300 divide by 12 = £108.33p per calendar month.

We are a small private yard & we supply our own hay & feed so the livery bill remains the same each month. We help each other out i.e. bring in anothers horse when needed etc & no money changes hands for this.

Blucanoo, that is what we do on our yard: livery paid a mth in advance,by direct debit, on 1st of month (ie. payment on 1st feb is for whole of feb's livery) and any extras billed at end of month (ie. january extras will be payable, by cash/chq/bank transfer, on jan 31st).

I've always paid in advance for livery.

Livery in advance - monthly was £118 then paid for the months hay and straw extra. Still only one invoice and payment each month.

So if your to move and give your notice 1 month in advance you only pay for the hay and straw when you leave. Livery would already be paid at the beginning of the month.
