Hi all,

I’ve had the offer of renting more grazing with the YO where I am currently and am a bit unclear on what a reasonable price is. I think the situation could be great for the horse as she could have close to 24/7 turnout over the winter but don’t want to be a numpty paying a high price if it’s beyond the scope of normal, especially as I’m a student on a not unlimited budget.
The situation is:
-Private yard
-close to 24/7 turnout on approx 10 acres grazing for the winter between 2 horses and 2 minis
-separate summer grazing if we take on the winter grazing
-arena with great surface + poles but no lights
-great hacking
-1/2 bale hay per day
-Oversize stable with rubber matting
-YO does t/o and b/i with her horse (although normally I do one end of the day, I’ve preferred paying to have that as the standard in case I’m late etc so mare stays in routine), picks feet when b/i, changes rug if needed and puts made feed in stable.

I muck out, hay, water, poo pick, normally t/o and buy in feed and bedding.

My current livery is £282 and will go to £360 with the extra grazing over winter - is this normal? I’m loathe to leave a great situ but just wondering where this sits in the scheme of things.

I know it is easy to say when I am not living on "student" money, but an extra £80 in the current climate of steeply rising prices seems a reasonable amount to pay to keep my horse out and happy on great acreage thro' the winter. If she were in longer you might spend a good part of that on additional bedding.

Ten acres of winter grazing between two horses and two tinies sounds amazing. And it should mean you don't "need" to ride as much (I see this as a good thing in winter!) as your horse will be able to maintain some fitness just pottering around the big field. If you're not struggling too much for the money, I would do it.

Thanks for the input all, really helpful! Since we’re on clay here daytime winter turnout is pretty rare in general so I’ve decided to take the offer! Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth and all that!
