Hi all
I wonder if you could give me some indication of livery prices in central Scotland (between Edinburgh and Glasgow)?
Looking for normal prices per month for full, part, assisted, and DIY, please.

And if you know of anywhere that allows strip grazing/restricted areas for laminitis, that would be groovy too. :)

Thanks in advance.

I’m 165 for diy, including hay and bedding and can divide up field as I see fit. I was dreading going from having horses at home to livery and have been very pleasantly surprised. It is a lovely yard with happy owners and horses.

I was paying £60/week for full livery (incl. bedding, haylage, turn out in large herd, muck out, change rugs etc) but that was 3 years ago now. It was a very small and friendly yard, horse and I were both very happy there, and we only left as we bought a house with land.

That seems idyllic (and cheap - it's about £200 here for DIY with no hay/bedding).
May I ask where you are - maybe by PM if you don't want to answer in public?

I am a little south of Edinburgh in the Borders.

I pay £25 per week for DIY, this includes all year turnout/grazing, use of indoor and outdoor school, horse walker etc.

This seems to be on par with the average of the prices in our area.

I have been on multiple yards across the Central belt on DIY livery, here are some costs:

  • £18-£22/week, depending on stable size, complete DIY, poor but workable facilities (East Dunbartonshire)
  • £25/week, complete DIY, bad facilities not suitable for riding (North Lanarkshire)
  • £30/week, complete DIY, small but rideable school with excellent hacking (West Lothian)
  • £50/week, mostly DIY with morning feed and turnout, and ad lib haylage included in price, excellent facilities but not the best turnout (North Lanarkshire)
  • £30/week, DIY with big bale haylage in fields included in winter, very good facilities and turnout (West Lothian)
  • £45/week, DIY with ad lib forage included in price, excellent facilities and turnout (Stirlingshire)

£190 per month assisted. Basically DiY with bring in and turnout.

Standard diy with arena and decent hacking seems to be £35 per week around here.

£47 per week at yard 1 for full grass livery.
£525 per month at yard 2 for full full livery. This one is £210 per month for DIY but does not include feed and bedding.

Ex-yard was £110 per week for full livery.
The yard the filly just left was £120 per week for full livery and £65 per week for DIY, which included hay and bedding.

My experiences...
DIY £30 a week with stable and individual turn out paddock of just over an acre. Hay and bedding extra (and expensive 17p a kilo hay). Outdoor arena, poor hacking from yard.

Part livery £45 a week..stable and small herd turn out on good sized fields. No arena only road hacking. Very expensive hay £50 large round bale...buy own bedding.

DIY £25 a week, stable, good sized field with couple of other horses, small indoor great hacking. Buy own hay and bedding.

Full livery £105 a week bedding hay and basic feed included. Individual small paddock turn out, outdoor arena poor hacking.

Its very variable...

£30 pw DIY (no assistance)
£40 per round bale of wrapped hay or Haylege
£35 per round of straw

24/7 turnout from April to October
Out during the day/in at night in winter in geldings field or mares field
Summer you are in a field with a few other horses normally max four. Can be mixed herd or not depending on the field or who you are sharing with.

small indoor
Large outdoor
Good hacking

North Lanarkshire

I'm at the wrong yards, clearly. All the ones I listed are expensive.

Yard 1 on my list has a good-sized well-maintained outdoor arena, and supposedly good hacking. Excellent turn-out in summer and winter. 24/7 summer turn-out and they are on hardstanding paddocks 24/7 in the winter.

Yard 2 has a huge outdoor, a sizable indoor which liveries often can't use because of the riding school, and amazing hacking. Excellent turn-out for horses who can be in large, single-sex herds, but limited for those who need individual or paired turn-out. The herds go out all day in winter, and then switch to overnight turn-out in summer. Strip horses get two hours per day. Extended to five hours per day from June to October last year, but who knows what current barn management will do. Neither of the current directors are horsey (although one is also director of Rangers).

Yard 3 has a postage stamp of an outdoor, limited hacking, but all day turn-out in both winter and summer.

Yard 4 has an indoor. Road hacking on quiet roads. No turn-out in winter.
