A new yard is opening up in the surrounding area. I brushed it off at it is a bit further away than I am just now and I was/am (?!) happy where I'm currently at.

I found a price list for them today and to be honest I'm a bit taken aback at the prices! I have been on DIY for the past nearly 8 years, with the most I've paid being £40 per week which included turn out, and the least being £30 which I pay just now. The new place is asking for £60per week for DIY !:eek:

To be fair, it sounds a bit more like full livery as they offer both turn out & bring in, ad lib hay and 1 bale of shavings. Stables are all brand new with automatic waterers.

:eek:maybe I'm getting old

Large yard I used to be on charged £50 a week for DIY - they have a large indoor, small XC course and outdoor dressage and jumping arena and a grass jumping arena too so they justify it by saying its for the facilities - personally I think anything more than £40 is a "we don't really want DIY here" price

Actually if you break the costs down, its not so bad. Hay and shavings = £20, turning and and bringing in at £3 per day = £21. DIY livery £19.
My petrol to travel to and from the yard twice a day costs approx £25 a week.

Automatic water in stables saves time and having cold, wet hands/boots.

Sounds quite reasonable, if you want your horses putting out etc, that is.

I'm curious to see if I could justify it. Currently I visit yard twice per day unless I'm on a long shift then I get a turn out/bring in in replace of helping someone else at one point. Each journey is 20minutes too and forth which is essentially 1hour 10minutes per day! I go through roughly 1 shavings per week and 1/2 small bales of hay. New place would be 30minute journey too and forth once a day.

...perhaps something to think about then and weight up the pro's and con's of this new yard eh?!!

I'm at a yard very similar to what you describe and that's what they charge too. My only downside is the distance and pay the same again to travel to and fro..:(. That said.. all year turnout is most important to me and the only place that offers it,...so i travel in order that my horse plays out all year...

I pay £45 a week. For ad-lib hay, 1 or 2 bales of bedding a week. (no bring in/turn out service) XC course, off road hacking and all weather arena. So sounds about right to me!

Depends where in the country it is, but there is a DIY yard near me that's £85 a week. Full livery is £205 a week. Facilities for the use of liveries is bloody amazing though! It's the equivalent of sending your horses to the Dorchester :)

Sounds reasonable. Why would you be looking to move as you don't say how the facilities differ just it's more expensive and further away
