I got up the yard last night to find a note stuck to my door, enclosed was a letter from the yard owner. Making a i quote "small increase" to the livery costs. I didn't mind that however it is going up £2.50 per week and the trailer/lorry parking fee has gone up by £2.50 a month.

So i have to find another £12.50 per month, my wages did not even increase that much. On top of that if you wish to use the school we have to pay £1 per half hour.

Does anyone else think this is a large increase for no more of a servivce or use of facilities. I get a stable and grazing for my weekly £30.

I don't think I will be able to school my horse anymore just can't afford it........

I don't think it sound horrendous. It depends on so many factors. When was the last price rise? Have the facilities improved? Is your rent already pretty cheap? etc etc.

How about looking at this from a different perspective?

You can now go and look for a job with better pay to cover your extra costs

I am not making light of your situation it is just sometimes if you look at things from a totally different angle it doesn't seem too bad at all.

Good luck

Oh nightmare! It seems a shame to have a school and not use it, problem is as you said it really starts to add up!

Just out of interest where abouts in Kent are you?

And sorry about the job, I’m sure you will find an even better job!

I do think that is dreadful charging you a £1 for half an hour
shocked.gif

Im thinking of charging £40-£45 per week for stable, turnout, unlimited hay/bedding/feed, use of 60 x 40 arena, off road riding (around 10 miles) with optional XC jumps. There will be clients lounge, rug room, tack room with individual lockable cupboards, solarium, wash room, toilet and shower.

How much do you pay for trailer parking?

It does sound a bit much mine went up 2.50 a month to 29.50 but that is with hay stable, grazing and use of indoor outdoor school. We have to put a pound in for the lights if we use indoor school at night.

awwwww thats crap to hear and i do know what you mean you some people may think ohh its only £12.50 extra a month but then if you have to pay for the school as well it can start heading towards £30 extra a month!!!

Hope you can sort it out

Well, in percentage terms yes, it does sound a lot....around 10%....but it does rather depend on when the prices last went up !? A lot of yards have put their prices up recently as the cost of straw and hay has (apparently) gone up quite alot recently....and insurance is always increasing too.

Bit of a bummer when you are about to be made redundant though !

I think it is appalling to charge you £1 per half hour in the school!

At my last yard I got a field, huge stable, unlimited straw, use of the school and jumps, and miles and miles of offroad hacking and I think that was just over £25 per week, though it went up slightly during my time there. They also hayed a couple times a day for you, morning and night for no extra charge, only the cost of hay which was about another £10 a week!

Oh no sounds awful, our livery went up 10% accross the board at the end of January including my trailer so now I pay £31.50 livery £4.10 for my trailer a week plus what with Bails coming back I've 2 stables the trailer and they are eating a large round bale (£28) a week, not getting much change out of £100 EEEEKKKK! I trully sympathise Roll on Spring at least the grass is free! This year I am going to save for the winter I am. Good luck with the job hunting x

Well technically the grass isn't free #30 livery includes that!Don't give YO ideas
grin.gif

Would be annoyed about paying for use of school as think that should be included in price of livery-unless it was an indoor and helps pay for rates/lights then I could understand it.We're 25 per week including straw and use of outdoor paddock with some lights.

I think that is a bit much. Charging for use of a manege is a bit old fashioned, it was something that seemed to be done when schools were a relative novelty. To up the parking of your trailer too is a bit naughty, it doesn't cost the land owner anything for you to park there so I think this is a bit cheeky, a lot of places don't charge for parking your vehicles anyway - it would seem from looking around that those who seem cheap per week use vehicle parking to bump the price up to the more average that is charged.
Try not to worry about your job, I was made redundant a couple of years ago and was really upset about it. However it turned out I got a much better job with much less hours!!!! you never know it may just be for the best. However as for the yard, maybe time to start looking elsewhere !!!
Good luck.

Wow thanks for such a quick response, i was just sitting at work feeling sorry for myself now I feel better.

I understand everything has to go up that's life, we have had no improvements to facilities.

JoBo i'm near medway towns/maidstone??

But i'm coming to live with you Cliare sounds great.

It is now £30 per week and £12.50 for the trailer per month. I do all my own field maintenance, repairing fences etc. I buy all my own feed, hay and bedding. So nothing is really included in my price. I see a lot of people get bedding and hay included??

I do feel better for other peoples views and am grateful for you all making me feel better xxx

I pay £40 per week DIY, and i have 2 pay extra for hay n shavings. shavings £6.50 and hay £12. i do get however 1 indoor, 1 outdoor, horse walker, and full size XC course and all year turnout, plus the stables are brand new indoor ones ! it also holds shows every week and weekend and has toilet n vedi machines in a lounge area.

Cheers chilly already started looking i'm surprised. One yard is charging £12 per week for stable grazing and a school.

Bit like what i already have but at a fraction of the price bit scared to go look at it though

I will pm you i may have the answer to your problems!

Im near the a249 in hartlip easy acsess to medway and maidstone! We have 2 spaces on the yard at the mo before they came up there i waited 3 years to get on this excellent small yard with my friends!!!!!

Paying for the school, that is ridiculous in my opinion.
And 10% is a huge increase.

I pay £22 a week for indoor stable, unlimited grazing, unlimited haylege, XC course, school and there is fab hacking.
also includes tack room, secure, feed room and everything else you could need.

Our yard is also an animal therapy centre too with physio, vet, farrier, reiki, mctimony etc on site.

WHAT! Surely the school come under your weekly pay for facilities? I pay £120 a month for all! Gallops, Jumps, Manage, Floodlits, Brillant T/o, And lovely stables, feed, hay, bedding delived to my stable! Super hacking... And parking for box... Yes the storage could be better, but its in Arundel! Which isn't known for being cheap lets say! Any other yards?

Once you start paying silly amounts you have cut on other things, I'd rather be cheaper yard and have nice things

My livery went up £3 a week from January. I think that is reasonable but I would grudge extra for having to pay to use the school.

wonder if this is due to the YO having her annual insurance policy premium put up ?
I would possibly guess something like this is the cause as insurance premiums are getting ridiculous - OR she's just got the notification for next year's business rate fees - or both.

YOs generally don't put up fees without a good reason and their costs are going up as well

Only thing I think is odd is the £1 per half hour for the arena (unless that only applies if you are using floodlights - in which case it is reasonable to cover the cost of the electricity)

as for not schooling - I put my horse into the arena about 1 every 2 months as I don't have time otherwise from escorting the kids on hacks - so my horse is schooled as I hack - shoulder in, half pass, leg yielding, halts, halts to trot, lengthened trot, working to extended and back to working canter again - all whilst hacking - and he doesn't realise he's being schooled so he never gets 'arena sick'

Our livery is DIY and it goes up by £5 a month every year, usually in October. It is now £80 per month and £8 for a trailer. That is just a field and stable with use of outdoor manege.
I think that the manege is part of the facilities and so people shouldn`t have to pay extra, as when they are advertising they tell you that they have a manege and whatever, then give you a price.

Why are you scared to go and look???? You sound like me, you don't like change
crazy.gif

The older I have got the more I have realised that change is not always bad - there is no harm in looking is there. Go on, be brave

I can understand asking for a payment for an indoor school but an outdoor, it seems a bit steep at £1 for half and hour in a school that has always been available to you as a livery for free before. If it were and indoor yes that would be different, but does that mean in the summer when you don't need the lights on you will still have to pay to use the area, this does seem very wrong. I only have an indoor school at my yard and I wouldn't dream of charging any of our liverys to use it as we don't have an outdoor arena and they have to be able to school their horses somewhere, but then again we also have 25,000 acres (yes that is right) of private riding off roads but in this weather and at this time of year none of us fancy that. I feel very sorry for you, it may be best for you to go yard shopping to see what other yards are around and do a pricing comparison. Good luck with your search and hope you manage to find a new and better job for yourself.

That is alot for Kent!!! Where are you stabled if you dont mind me asking??

I pay £20 a week but most of the yards in the area are £30 a week so would consider that acceptable. Anymore then i wouldn't pay personally!!

And as for being charged for the school as well, well that is just rediculous and i would be moving asap if i was you!!

Thing is i have noticed so many yards now are not doing DIY coz they are making no money out of it so that is probably the reason your prices have gone up so dramatically.

I'm moving back to the yard i used to be at be further away from home but much better. Now i drive to work and don't get the train it is no longer an issue that i have a yard within walking distance. Only reason i moved in the first place.

Yes Finni going back home, to Ryarsh. Sorry i jinxed the increase!!
frown.gif

I will pay £30 for UMLIMITED use of two schools, mini XC course and gallop track, hack is great half hour from South Downs so i am really happy now!!!

Thanks for the insite to other peoples rates and what you get for it.

I did speak to the YO when i hand in my notice the increase of £10 per month is small and is to cover the damage to the building/tack lockers when we got broken into and our saddles were stolen. The YO will not be offering anymore service like empting the muck trailer anymore regularly or doing our field maintenance.

We still have to pay for the school, it does not have lights so we not even paying for those, oh and i harrow the school otherwise it doesn't get done.

YO also has a full livery section and that has not gone up in price.
