Does anyone know of any good livery yards in south Nottinghamshire?

I was at a lovely little yard in Radcliffe on Trent a couple of years ago, before moving to a larger yard in East Leake (as I wanted a lit school so I could ride in the winter). However, they are now buidling a load of new stables, and the yard is getting too big/busy.

Ideally I'm after a place that is not too big (no more than 20ish horses), has decent sized stables, a decent sized/surfaced school, and good off-road hacking. I'd also prefer individual/paired turnout but not too bothered. I will need DIY livery but would like the option of having full livery when I'm away/cant get down for whatever reason.

Am I asking for too much or do such yards exist?

Thanks a lot
x

Colston Bassett doesnt have much turnout unfortunately! There is a severe shortage of good livery yards around us. May be worth looking at hollygate in cotgrave. Stunning yard, lots of turnout, and huge school with the country park on the door step. It was very down in the mouth, and got a rubbish reputation, but has picked up the last few weeks due to new management. They don't do full livery, but I think there may be a couple of liveries there that would do it for you if you went away.

ETA, Shelford is worth looking at too. Fab new school, the toll ride so loads of off road hacking, Newton XC just up the road etc. :)

Interesting to read that Kat, thought the Cotgrave yard looked lovely but poorly run. We're still looking, our place is lovely, owned by fantastically helpful farmers, but the lack of daily turn out or a school is not what we want ideally. Unfortunately the amount we have means we've not got much chance of finding anywhere with enough room.... We are also keeping an eye out for a farm rather than an existing horse based yard, you never know.
What's the one at Shelford? Not heard of that, but Bingham/Newton way isn't too far for us.

Shelford is the village between Radcliffe and Newton. I was there years ago but it has changed a lot since. It is called Sycamore farm and run by peter and Vanessa Barlow. nice enough place but if you have a lot then they may not have room. also I don’t rate the hacking round the toll ride at all and the roads there are a nightmare. if you prefer to school than hack then it would be ideal and they do "extras" for an additional fee. look out in tack shops and stuff as there are quiet often little yards to rent etc and new livery yards.

Thats interesting re. the hacking on the toll ride! I'm at Newton, and the hacking for the toll ride is fantastic in my experience compared to anywhere else in the area!?! Can easily go out for a couple of hours without riding down roads for any length of time, and also have the airfield which is fantastic!

Ha, looks like we did a switch. as I left Newton and went to Cotgrave. over 6 years I tried yards at Shelford, Saxondale and finally Newton and never found what I was looking for with regards to hacking whereas I am more than happy with it in Cotgrave, not only for the off road but also for the roadwork - I find the roads much more pleasant and the people more horse friendly. I found all or the hacking on the toll ride to be poorly maintained and full of horsey hazards and to be honest I dreaded going on it! and riding through the 30mph village of Newton was on most days akin with hacking down the A46. having had one bad accident on the airfield and a couple of near misses I really didn’t think of it as a pleasant hacking location….so sorry but I fail to see the attraction to it in the slightest. and now I have hacking that I can use and I don’t even have to pay!
Interesting that you changed your mind about Newton as the last time I talked to you, you didn’t want to go there.

Bexaco, I live in Cotgrave, call in some time for a natter!
Has that yard got any space at the mo?

super! where abouts are you? Do you have any horses? if so where do you keep them? I keep my girly with the Marriotts up devils drop. Unfortunately we are absolutely crammed at the moment but I am sure if you came and saw Nicky she would pop you on the waiting list for if any places came along.

Devils drop sounds like a theme park ride! I'm stuck in the middle, horses are at Long Clawson. Am always up for coffee and a chat, will pm you my number.

If you don't want to move too far from East Leake area, on the way into Gotham there is a yard called Stonepit Farm.
I worked there for the last year (part time) whilst doing my 4th year, YM is really nice and happy to help whenever you need.
Individual turn out. Stables are really quite large! Easy access to lots of off road hacking. And the YO whips in for the quorn if you are into hunting.......

Outdoor floodlit arena.
Small indoor for if its just gross outside...

DIY, Part or full livery. :)

Well interesting what doing your own research can do to change your mind isn't it :) Teach me to not be lazy and check things out myself instead of getting things 3rd hand :D Pleased you are happy at Cotgrave :D
