Hey, so I just wanted to find out what people’s opinions are on the right amount of horses in a field. Im at a livery yard and in my field there are 3 horses. But the yard rule is you’re not allowed to leave a horse out by itself. (Which is fair enough) However, it can get tricky at times if you want to go out for a ride or bring one in. If another has already come out of the field leaving one in.

Are there any ways in which to go around it? Maybe adding another horse to make it even or something else?

Can you bring the other horse in too?
Wanted to do that the other night when the weather was bad, but the other owner wanted the horse to stay out. They are currently out 24/7. They just wouldn’t budge when it came to bringing the other horse in. They just didn’t want that and wanted the horse to stay, there was no way they were bringing it in.even though I did say I would bring the horse in. Even though I did say I would bring the horse in

This is one for the YO to sort.

If the yard rules are that no horse is left out alone, then liveries need to know what is expected of them if they want to bring their own horse in which would leave a horse out alone. Are they expected to bring in the other horse or not, or should the YO sort it.

This sort of rule on livery yards would drive me nuts, my horses are trained to be out on their own at times.

Equally I wouldn’t have randomers catching up and bringing my horse in. And who is responsible if the randomer lets go of the horse and randomer/horse gets injured?

We have this on our yard as a between us rule. There are a few horses that don't like being out on their own so if you're bringing yours in and they would be out of sight of another you bring theirs in too. Works well most of the time

I was lucky it didn't affect me because kiki was happy out on his own, I miss him

So the yard rule is no horse left out alone.

This one livery wants to break the yard rule and have her horse left out alone.

If the livery wants to break the rule, then she needs to get this to be agreed by the yard manager. Until then, stick to the rule and bring the horse in.

Speak to the yard owner. At least make her/him aware that you want to bring your horse in, and are happy to bring the final horse in but the owner wants to leave it out. They can decide what needs to be done and that way it’s definitely not going to fall on you if the horse left outside alone does something stupid.

I fully understand why these rules exist but as per your example they don't work unless the owner of whichever horse is last is happy for it too be brought in. It's unreasonable for them to insist you leave yours out because they don't want theirs in.

Definitely one for the YO. If the answer is that you can't get your horse whenever you want then you will have to move.

We kind of have this as an unwritten rule at our DIY yard. It is considered rude to leave a horse out on his own IF you are capable of bringing him in safely and you'll be bitched about for weeks if you do. The people with disabilities get a free pass as does anyone who doesn't want to handle the thug of a highland.
