hi all,
I've been keeping my horses at the same livery yard for just over two years. In this time I've come from being the only livery there to It being totally packed with a long waiting list. There are two main field for the liveries, both of which are split up into paddocks. The front field is broken up into about 7 paddocks and the back field is split into two.
For the last few months my two mares have been in one of the paddocks in the back field, there have been no other horses in the back field, just mine. But now another two horses have been moved into the back field with my mares. There is a fence splitting them up, however I have to walk through these two horses field to get to my mares. IT AWFUL! every time I go to put my mares out they end up getting attacked by the other horses. Thankfully no one has been hurt YET. however I am really worrying for when one of my mares is next on heat!
I don't really 'get on' with the owners of these two horses, It's not like we've had a fall out but they often make comments about my mares attacking their horses! But they're not the ones who have to lead there horses through a field full of other horses, I worry for my safety often as I have already been trampled before...
What should I do?
would it be okay to make a 'walk way' with electric fencing so I can pass through with out getting anyone hurt?
HELP!!!

Sounds like you need to have a polite word with your livery yard owner, explain the situation. In my opinion, putting up an electrified walkway is perfectly reasonable, makes life a lot simpler for all concerned.

a walk way would be the best solution I had a similar situation at my old yard but the made sure electric tape/posts were there for you to make a walk way with . if you have been at the same livery yard for 2 year you must have a reasonably sane YO ( lucky !!) why don't you bring it up with her and ask about putting up a walk way??

Definitely. Speak to the YO about putting some electric fencing along to make a walkway so that you and the horses are safe. I did this when I had liveries before the horses were split up, I wouldn't want the risk of any accidents on my yard. Any YO with half a brain should think likewise.

If it were me, I'd speak to the YO but I'd also be taking in a lunge whip when I bring my horses in and using it to shoo off the other horses and stop them getting too close!

You could build a walk way, would be reasonable. There is one at my curent yard in a shared field. Or ask to swap to the other side of split field so yours are closest to the gate.

Does mean other will be walking through your field though.

It's not your responsibility to split the field, it's the YO's and it should have been done before the new horses were put in. Whatever is s/he thinking of? If you find yourself paying for the fencing, knock the total amount off your next livery bill. There is certainly an accident waiting to happen here.

I personally think this set-up is totally out of order and I would seriously wonder about any YO who thought this was acceptable. You need to speak to the YO, tbh I'd have discussed it before the other horses even arrived.

thanks for all the replies,I will speak to the yard owner tonight. I have a lot of electric fencing so thats no problem, however I will have to ask the yard owner for an electrifier of just leave it uncharged :S but i understand that the horses will probably break through...
Hopefully it will sort itself out, I mainly annoyed because I was hoping to swap to the field by the main entrance as mine has no grass and a terrible ragwort problem :(

After this comment - I'd be looking for a new yard to be honest.

Ditto this. Also do bear in mind your own safety, i.e. wear hard hat & body protector, and appropriate boots. Sorry, probably telling granny to suck eggs but you'd be surprised how many people don't do it. Mine used to be at a training yard where you HAD to be "properly" attired to catch in and turn out.

yeah I'd love that option however this current yard is the only one that I can walk to as I cant drive :(. I'll just have to bear with pulling all the ragwort by hand

well most people have to pull ragwort-you're yo should do this tbf but many liveries do it. re: walkway- if you approach yo with this suggestion I see no problems .
