I am thinking of starting a livery yard in Duffield, and am after a bit of advice really as to how much people wolud be prepared to pay and what facilities you would want. It will have approx. 12 stables and I would be living on site. Any hints and tips will be greatfully received. Also I would want to have about 5 or 6 full liveries and the rest either part or DIY. Are there people out there who will want full or do most want DIY?

Hi

I live near Duffield and although not looking to move in the near future, I would be looking at DIY.

For me I have two, and one basically needs a field and some hard standing for the farrier to trim on, the other is my ridden horse and although is happy to live out the more facilities for him the better.

What is the hacking like around you, and is there a school or plans to install one?

I am looking for livery near duffield, preferably Assisted DIY type thing with turnout included. The most important thing for me is having a good floodlit manege and all year round turnout in the day :)

Hi Ladybird, not really sure on hacking as yet, although speaking to local farmer and hopefully will have access to his land. Ref a school we will be having one maybe indoor it really is at very early stages. What would be the size of school you would require?
Fflurcomet turnout will not be a problem as I require that for mine too. Again ref school it is still at stages of looking where to put one, and wether to compromise on size and have an indoor one or go for slightly bigger and have outdoor. There will also be a jumping field as well.
What about price, what would you expect to pay?

Considering moving to Derbyshire as husband now working for RR in Derby during the week. Would be looking for part livery and an indoor school, for people working, an indoor sch is fantastic - especially in this snowy weather! Good luck with your venture :)

I know of a couple of people who started similar things and unfortunately didn't work out financially.

Think maybe because if your renting your overheads are high and DIY doesn't pay much, also on the current financial climate people can't afford full livery. If you own the place then there's a bit of money in it but I wouldn't say you could rely on the income fully. You would also need to allow for stables to be empty etc x

I think anybody who is willing to pay full livery wants good facilities (tend to be money "rich", time poor.... and normally have to ride in the dark!). I know the area relatively well and there does not seem to be much on offer for full/part livery on a small yard, but their is a more options for good DIY.

Unfortunately, I cant give you any business advice as I don't have a clue!

WE would be wanting 5 or 6 full liveries and then the rest either part or diy. My husband will still have his job and I plan to keep my existing job until we get reasonably full. Hoping to have an indoor school and outdoor jumping schooling paddock. We will also be looking into having a horse walker and maybe a solarium, although these wouldnt be straight away. The area offers very good security and like I say hacking wise we are in talks with the adjoining farmer to open up some of his land. I know its not going to be easy and we are not going to make millions but if I can combine my hobby with work then it will be something I have wanted to do for many years.

I live in Duffield so obviously know the area well. Have you thought about the planners? I had the most awful time when I applied to build my manege and then subsequently applied for floodlights (which I got) but the opposition from locals was so vitriolic that all i wanted to do was move. People around here are the most awful busybodies and will do everything they can to oppose any kind of development. Mine was just for personal use- so good luck if you think applying for an indoor school and business use will be easy. Please PM if you would like more info or help to combat the Duffield Mafia
Good luck anyway!

Hi shellibob I have done a lot of research on this and have decided that it is not in the best place for me to offer what I would like. It's a shame as I really would like to find somewhere to do it.
