What do you prefere being on your own or being at a livery yard? Im on my own and miss the buzz of the livery yard but i like the fact i dont have to get up and muck out!
I'm on my own, mum used to have a livery yard, miss the chats and buzz but don't miss my things going missing and liveries turning up at god knows what time in the night from shows. Plus, I can sing to my horses and noone will snigger!
I like being at a livery yard the social side is pretty good.
Given the choice I would have them at home again. I don't like driving all over the place and mostly I miss the late night check.
You can't beat the sound of contented munching neddies.
I'm pretty much "on my own" where I am - a field in the middle of nowhere. There are other liveries but I only see them very, very rarely. I LOATHE being away from the yard I was forced to move from, although it did get a bit sour up there (politics
) but the only reason I have managed to live through the last eight months is the knowledge that I WILL go back there! I really miss it, I could never have my horse at home on my own
I prefer livery now. Never thought I would - hated the thought of it. Thought I would hate giving up control of when they went out and when they were wormed and with what etc etc.
But I LOVE being on livery now. LOVE the social side and LOVE the fact that I can go away and just leave a note in the diary asking for full livery whilst I'm gone. LOVE the fact that I need to go to the yard daily, but it doesn't matter when because he's turned out and brought in and fed for me. LOVE the indoor school so I can ride in the evening after work. LOVE the fact that I only have 1 horse now and don't need to keep a companion for the sake of it.
Don't think I'd ever have him back home now. Would need to get another one for company, and would need to employ someone to look after him. I work odd hours and can't guarantee I would be able to turn out/bring in in daylight hours.
Love being able to keep horses turned out 24/7, rest or wreck fields as we wish, and to have more than one horse without paying for livery for each one. Miss the social side, but I'm quite happy riding alone, although I do sometimes have company. I do miss having a school, and ours aren't at home, they are a mile away, if they were at home I would be in heaven!
Deffinately on my own, I would do everything in my power to prevent putting my horse on a yard. They are too much hasstle, too ridgid and full of impossible people.
My horse has a two and a half acre field to himself with a field stable, so he can be out and please himself. My field is in good nick because I look after it and is never muddy in winter and I always have plenty of grass. I also like to do my own thing riding wise and look after my horse the way I want without interferance.
I am with Pottamus. Our two are out 24/7 on our own land, in an area where there are two other people doing the same thing. We all keep an eye on one anothers fields / horses, and help out when needed.
There are four friends in the area doing pretty much the same thing, so we can always arrange to ride in company if we wish.
We always found livery to be hassle, mainly due to poor YM, who also ran a riding school, and angry YO who appeared to hate everyone. Not a nice environment.
We've been doing our own thing for five years now and see no reason to change.
If I had land at home I would love to have horses with me there, and that would be my first choice. I am on a good yard though, with facilities I could probably never afford at home.
For a while I did rent a field and stables locally. I spent 50 % of my time on maintenance, filling troughs, fixing fences, dealing with the pasture, toting bales ...never underestimate how long all of that takes - I chose to pay to have most of that done for me in the end.
My friend bought her dream place to keep her's at home and it was lovely witha menage, but she hated being by herself, she did try sharers but it didn;t work, now has horses on livery..
Had Rose at livery for 3 years and now been home for nearly 5 years. Would never go back to having her under somebody else's control, and love the freedom of feeding what I want, when I want and which field to put her in. But, I miss the luxury of going on holiday whenever I choose as I have to fit in with the girl who keeps her horse with me to arrange cover, and I hate doing late checks in the winter. But, it is worth it to manage your own land, be proud of it, and do your own thing.
I am on a livery yard and love it. I love being able to have a chat with other horsey people and the social life. I have never been on my own but I have been on small yards and larger yards and much prefer a large busy yard.
I also like the fact that there is someone there to lend a hand if needed and always someone to ask for advice.
So much better having them at home. We have done a bit of both - I grew up with the horses at the end of the garden, and kind of took it for granted. We actually took a livery once, and what a nightmare that turned out to be!
Then it was a case of 'you dont know what you've got until its gone' - we had to sell up very suddenly, the two oldies were PTS throughout the space of one year, and we had to find somewhere we could livery Ellie. Luckily some friends of ours just a mile from our new house offered us a place, and we were there for a year. But it was far from ideal; they are very competitive SJers, whereas I at the time was a mere happy hacker, and so it was hard to watch them on their strict fittening regimes and not feel obliged to work Ellie as hard. Also we were very limited with turnout, and the stable was far too small, resulting in Ellie getting cast one night
The upside was that they would happily step in and look after her if we went away or got caught up at all, so it did have some advantages. But the best thing was when our landlords gave us permission to demolish an old tin shed and build a stable to replace it; they have also given us enough turnout for Ellie, so we're now back to having her at home! And I wouldnt change it for the world
Im on livery atm but moving him home exactly 4 weeks today when we move house and i cant wait!
I dont like livery tbh
Im giving up crazy facilities when we move but gaining complete control over his day to day routine. Hopefully i'll only be without a school for a few months too.
i keep our two on a farm based livery yard , all great people and someone to talk to at odd hours lol , we have yard gymkhanas, treasure hunts, daft gatherings in tackroom over coffee and no bitchiness
..... but ....., i,d give anything to be able to wake up on a summers morning and see my horses out of the bedroom window
At home definately. Although not completly on own as have a couple of friends who keep their ponies here. Live in quite a horsey area anyway so there is always someone to ride with.
I love being on my own. I can't be doing with livery yard politics and being told what I can and cannot do. I have sensibly rotated grazing (not 17 horses in a 2 acre field/mud patch!) and if I want to put hay in the field I can etc etc
Its so much better having them at home. My two are kept at home. Dont get lonely as my sister rides with me in the evening and at weekends. Yards are just too bitchy.
I have to keep mine at livery partly cos I have health problems but also cos he's standing at stud there, and I would not have the facilities or expertise in stud work to do this myself.
But tbh I am very happy with this - the yard he's on is a stud/training yard, and it's full-livery only, and very well managed, so there is never any b*tching or 'politics'! The YO is super, and the staff are always cheerful and friendly and helpful; nothing is ever too much trouble, everything is done with a smile. My stallion gets 5-star care and training, and lots of affection - they all adore him. And it's a fun place to be, always someone nice to have a cup of tea and a chat with... What more could I want?!
