Hello, We have just moved to a new yard which is siutated on a farm. There is no security gate to prevent our or any other horses of our side of the yard running up the farm track onto the road.

Is there any laws or regulations i.e helath and safety that say that all liverys must have a security gate to prevent any horses getting loose onto public roads etc etc

If any one knows it would be a great help as our farmer is refusing to put up a gate.

many thanks

chris

It is usually the livery yard insurance company that insists on secure fencing and gates. If the farmer is just relying on his Public Liability Farm insurance to cover his liveries this means you really don't have any cover as a livery. When I set my yard up I had to take out 'private livery yard' cover which meant I had to identify my fencing, the heights at the lowest part and all the gates for security. Hope this helps

when i wasnt happy about a side of horses field next to roads in terms of fencing i told YO i was buying fencing for that stretch (electric) and would remove it when I left the yard, and that worked well. More tricky to take the gate once its in,but for peace of mind I would get it put in. Maybe he would help put it in if you buy it?

my yard which is on a farm sounds like this and we are just sorting that out! as there are two exits that they could get out of if they bolted on the rope or just barged at the gate !

its just hard as our farmer likes to be able to dive his tractor in and out without having to have a fence or gate there but we are having our new fields fenced in august so im putting up fences and gates !

which i have to do as at the mo I'm having my yard bhs approved so Ive got to get all the things on the list sorted out ,or i wont get it !!
there is no rules its all down to the insurance company's
and we are with the nfu and they have been and didn't state anything !
hope this helps
best try to advice your farmer to do it explain the what if's if a horse got on the road
good luck

I know of at least one BHS Approved Livery yard with no gate between the stable yard and an adjacent road!
