Just wondering what the normal situation was at your livery yard. Do you have to buy your hay or haylage from the YO? Do you have the option of sourcing your own and would you have to pay to store it at the yard?

Usually I sell my hay to liverys at £35 round bale, £3.50 small, but haven't explored options for haylage yet. I have limited space in a brand new barn, so feel a little miffed the sudden need for haylage comes only once I've sourced all the winter hay. Trying to find a best possible arrangement for the future.

I store my haylage outside and just bring inside the bale that I open and am using, they last fine outside as long as the are wrapped properly, could this be an option?

We can buy dry haylage from the YO(makes their own haylage) at £9 per week or can source our own (limited storage)
I wouldn't be surprised if the rules changed though because lots are sourcing their own and YO still has half of last years haylage left.

We have to buy the yards hay/haylage. The hay is £6.50 per bale but I don't know how much their haylage is as I have never bought it.

We can buy from YO or outside. If we buy out YO not only unloads for us but doesn't charge for storage. Large heston bale of hay is £30 and good quality.

We don't use haylage so can't answer that part.

Am diy and I help yard owner with field ragworting every year so I know our home grown hay is organic and weed free and the benefit is she then lets me have it at £2.50 a small bale instead of £4 well worth a few hours ragworting!
I currently have a poor doer though and she lets me buy haylage in for him in the winter, luckily have a local man who will deliver a big round bale at a time but we would be pushed for space if everyone wanted to buy there own in as she fills the barn every summer with our fresh cut hay

I'm on DIY and at our yard we have to buy hay and straw from the yard (£5.50 hay, £3.50 straw) but are free to source haylage or alternative bedding elsewhere and have space to store smallish amounts.

We can only buy hay or haylage from outside, yard doesn't supply anything. Everyone is allocated a bale storage area when they arrive which can be indoors or outside, depending on where your stable is.

Each livery is responsible for organising having their own bales delivered and moved to where they need to be, though I've recently been buying hay off the same guy the YO does and having my bale put in the lorry with theirs.

My yard doesn't do it's own hay or haylage. I'm on DIY and between the 9 or 10 of us we use 3 different farmers for our hay. Not sure how it works for the liveries though I think they allowed to use a different farmer than the YO as long as they tell the staff so they don't buy too much.

A yard my friend is at however will not let you buy hay or haylage (or bedding!) from anyone but them.
