Hi.

This might sound very very stupid so I do apologise in advance. We are very keen to move yard, rubbish not maintained facilities, dodgy fencing, self appointed managers and yo don’t care about anything, if anything breaks-fix it yourself have contributed to decision to move.

We are on the waiting list for livery yard nearby with fantastic facilities, manager that actually does the job and keeps politics at bay. Yard is highly reputable and has long waiting list where we at the top(we get a text update from ym when you move up) of it so we are sitting patiently twiddling fingers and waiting. We’ve been on waiting list for nearly a year. Price per month it’s the same I’m paying now.

I have several friends there who moved from my current yard there and they have hinted me that two stables have become empty around two weeks ago. One horse relocated with family and the other sadly pts.

Can anyone kindly inform and educate me how livery yard works? Do they arrange for new people right after space become available or do they have empty stables for a while for example if old tenant decide to come back? Or to pay respect to the owner of the horse that was sadly pts?

I really don’t want to sound insensitive and I apologise if I do but I’m trying to figure it out. Perhaps livery yard owner or manager?

Many thanks

They may well be holding the stables in case the person who's horse died gets another and in case another livery buys a second horse. If i were you I think i would pop along and ask whether they think a stable will come free soon, unless you think they will interpret that as you pressuring them.

I know when I lost my horse was given time to clear away belongings and also to say whether I wanted to retain the stable.

I would also expect that if a livery yard is full - when they have an empty stable they may take the opportunity to do needed maintenance work - both to that stable and possibly to others using that stable as a temporary home for displaced horse. Also possible reorganising horses within boxes (eg getting bigger horses in larger boxes) / trying to get multiple horses with one owner adjacent etc

In my experience you have to be a bit pushy … let the yard know you are really keen to move there , go and visit , talk to the yard owner , be smiley and nice , make them like you and want you there .. I wouldn’t delay asking about a free stable if you have heard there is one , It is a business and they won’t want to leave stables empty

I'm on a great full livery yard which has had 2 empty stables for a few months now. They have been kept empty deliberately because one was occupied by a horse which was PTS and the livery is paying a retainer pending getting a new horse (but taking their time!), and the other because it's given the yard a spare space to shuffle others round while they do some painting and electrical maintenance. Also, having two fewer horses on the turn out over the winter has helped with pasture management.

So there may well be good reasons why 'your" yard is holding spaces. That said, I would drop the YM a polite note and say you're still interested and keen to move if anything were to come available. Nothing to lose.

I also think they might be being respectful, the livery might have paid for another month yet therefore giving them time to clear out the stable or possibly get something else. Nothing to lose by sending a little message asking if something has become available and that you are interested should it

Echo this. A lot of the time (In my experience) livery yard owners forget who’s waiting for stables and won’t chase people up. I’d pop them another message, it may well be what others have suggested. But at least they will know you’re still interested, a lot of the time you have to be pushy

I think I might ask my friends already there if they could shed a bit more light on this. Others have given good reasons why stables might be being held but your friends could surely suss this out for you and then you can decide whether or not to approach the YM just now.

Pop in at a non busy time of the day. It makes a difference to meet face to face and show the YM that you're the kind of owner that is pleasant and not a fruit cake.
I once visited a fab yard unannounced, but was told that they didn't have space for 3 horses. The next day, I unwittingly visited again, because I was confused and entered the property from a different road. YO laughed and told me it was the same ( very big) yard. He admired my persistence and probably, my desperation, and gave me two stables and one summer grass livery until a third stable was available.

You need to keep in regular contact with the YO to show you are still keen I think. Not stalker like lol but gentle reminders you are very interested. A lady I knew lost the place she d been allocated because she dropped off the YM radar for 4 weeks..other people were keeping in touch and YM gave them the place.

Could your friends ask the manager if other horses are coming in?
Maybe suggest you, at least they know you and, if you all get on, there will be no yard politics.
Thank you we thought of that but don’t want to sound insensitive

I worry that they will think that.

I will pop them a message but I’d wait another week or so just to be respectful as I little bit know the girl who’s horse been pts, we use to be on the same yard years ago. I don’t want to come across pushy and desperate although I’m very keen to move there. I am familiar with this yard as it’s very close to yard I am now. Ym of this yard follows us on social media page where we put videos and photos of our horse showing how loved and spoiled he is, she’s keen follower always likes and comments saying he’s a lovely boy so I hope she somehow knows we not fruit cake but loving caring owners. She knows us and our horsey as our hacking route leads through their yard and we always wave and say hello to each other.

I would definitely get your friend on there to give them a nudge.
I know the yard I’m leaving and the yard I’m about to go to basically have a “waitlist” that has people on they don’t think would fit on the yard or otherwise appear to be troublemakers!
In fact the yard I’m leaving usually always operates at full capacity but there’s been an empty stable for a few months as YO hasn’t found anyone who she would happily have on the yard who only has one horse!
If one of the liveries was to recommend someone they would get it first over others! And I’m pretty sure I’ve been given a stable at the new place because I know some of the existing liveries.

I had something similar. 2 to move. New yard had one empty stable and another where a horse had died.
The YO spoke to the poor owner of the horse that had died. She kindly said I could use the box until she found another horse (I had to move out of where I was as it was closing).

I moved. Then the lady got another horse. My 2nd horse then lived out 24x7 unless it was going to tip down, when they put her in an old cattle barn for the night.

This lasted for 2 months and then another stable became free for my 2nd horse and I was already there waiting to take it up.

Is there is a possibility that that this could work where you want to move to? It is summer so living out 24x7 wouldn't necessarily be too bad.

Definitely this. My YO would always go for WOM over anyone on a wait list. And you don't know how proactive other people on the yard might be about getting their friends a place. Ask your friends to speak to the YO on your behalf. (Assuming they are good liveries and get on well with the YO).

I think livery yard lists can be a bit of a lottery. Existing good liveries get priority. Friends of yard owners get priority and the list often gets lost! Sometimes it's about asking at the right time. Good luck.

personally I would text the yard owner today and ask about the free stables waiting lists are often forgotten about and often times people skip the queue. A lot of times if a stable is good people don’t move for years. It’s also not insensitive in Ireland if a horse is pts in a livery yards is get your stuff and leave most yards won’t let people pay for a stable for a horse they might not have for months over getting a a stable full now. I know this might upset people but it’s the reality.

I'd definitely keep in regular contact with the YO, so she knows you're still keen. I have a waiting list, but whenever I have a space, everyone on the list has already found somewhere else, sold their horse, decided they want DIY, etv etc, so it's a bit of a waste of time going though it - easier to just advertise

They usually let the owners of any passes away horses keep boxes for a couple of monthb if they are happy to pay while said owner decides if they want another horse. I’ve been on yards with boxes paid and empty for months before

A massive update! I’m moving! I grew a pair and went there. Ym said she does have two stables empty and I was going to be called next week. She did say one stable goes to the other person and the other is mine she did however gave a month to clear belongings of the horse that was pts. I better start packing! No more dusty arenas that gets harrowed once a year, no more politics no more grumpy behaviour from yo whenever you ask him to fix something!
