Due to the fact my family are uprooting and hoping to move into Edinburgh from East Lothian within the next four months I need to look for a new yard around Edinburgh. I'm seventeen, soon to be eighteen and hoping by the point we move I will have passed my test so will be able to drive to the yard.

I have two big geldings. The yard I'm at is VERY relaxed and entirely DIY - i currently pay for a stable, a field and hay during the winter and do the rest entirely myself. I would be looking at Grass or DIY livery (but probably have to organise something with the yard owner as to exactly what our needs are)

My budget is within reason - up to around £200 a month per horse but incredibly flexible due to the fact we are going to be saving a lot of travel money (my mother works from Edinburgh mostly and my brother goes to a school in town) by moving.

I would like to be on a yard with an indoor arena, outdoor arena, good grazing and optimum would also be cross country facilities available (or incredibly close to somewhere that offers this).

I don't want to be on a very small yard as I like hacking with others and feel if there was only perhaps ten of us I'd hardly see anyone!

Any suggestions?

To be honest we're not 100% sure! We're wanting something around Ravelston Dykes area but close enough to Haymarket that I can get out along the A8 straight out to Broxburn - So I would prefer something west of Edinburgh but as I say my upper limit to travel is probably around forty minutes so anything either way is great!

I've been looking at Kirklands and Little Ochiltree as they are 10 minute hacks from SNEC and one of my horses is a bad traveller so it would be brilliant to be that close to somewhere that hosts competitions and such! Anyone know anything about them or have any other recommendations (as I want to go and look at as many yards as possible)

Both little ochiltree and kirklands are nice yards. Ochiltree is slightly closer to snec only by a few minutes. I did my college work experience at kirklands nice yard with nice people and does have some cross country jumps in the fields but ochiltree has a small indoor school aswell which can be used for trot work and lungeing. There is a few other yards dotted around that area. If you have any more questions just ask

there are a number of yards in the edinburgh area, unfortunately im not sure about the ones in the area that you are looking for, but I can highly recommend mount skip, I moved last sunday and have never been happier at any other yard, they have a big indoor school and an outdoor arena both flood lit, and theres always someone pottering about at most times and has what i have seen so far good hacking, close to vogrie and stobbs farm that do competitions and 5 mins drive from the A68 which is again about 5 mins onto the city bypass

I would highly recommend Whitfield Farm Livery on the outskirts of West Linton which is about 15 minutes from the city bypass/ski slope so easy access if on the west side of the city. Purpose built yard with indoor school (20x40) and large outdoor school (50x60m) with good all year turnout. Lots of good hacking as well. Quiet, laid back yard with very nice folks.

Our local riding club uses it as one of their training venues and holds dressage and SJ shows there over the winter months.

Hey, there are a lot of good yards in edinburgh area. Maybe worth joining one of the local FB pages to find out a bit more on them, or find out alternatives... Some of the ones you listed have thier own pages too, do you know anyone in the area who can help you out? x

Just in case someone is looking again...
Thornton Livery is only 20min from Edinburgh center by car but we have fabulous countryside hacking and some of the best facilities on offer in the area, including 20mx40m indoor school.
