Really good one is Holmeside Hall (not Holmside Park, often confused!) We compete there alot and my OHs aunt (a chief BHS examiner) teaches there.

Lovely boxes and arenas and I think they have a XC course planned in the future. Danielle is lovely, and they've been advertising only this week that they have some places available (very rare!).

Good luck with the move, I moved up here from Crawley last year. Admittedly I grew up not far from where I am so it's not been too bad. You'll realise everyone is very friendly up here, much more than down south!!

Another good website to ask for local advise is

www.giddyupnorth.com

The forums are very friendly and full of local people.

Good luck!

There are some really nice yards in Lanchester which is about halfway between Consett and Durham City. I particularly like the Morten's yard which does DIY. Its a beautiful place in a lovely setting. There is an outdoor arena which holds up really well in poor weather and a small indoor. They do all year turn out and they have their own gallops and access to off road hacking.
If your OH is going to be working at Frankland Prison there is actually a yard just next door to it (Union Hall) - I don't know if that would be convenient for you or not. It has 2 outdoor arenas and 1 indoor and does DIY and full livery. I can give you contact details for either if you are interested.
Oh and as for Holmside Hall - the pic in my siggie over the multicoloured jump is at Danielles' which should give you an idea of her indoor school. I have a friend who is already a livery there if you are considering looking there.
The yard I'm at is great and has fantastic facilities but only does full livery I'm afraid.

there are afew smaller yards on the plawsworth estate nr durham, i think 2 of them have outdoor arenas and one has an indoor (not completely sure) and all have great hacking.
union hall is a nice yard but in my experience has alot of yard bitchiness.
there will be several yards in lanchester and around consett which will be more convienient (sp) for you.
i think ivesley equestrian centre does livery too, it has indoor and outdoor arena great hacking and XC course.

Hey!

We're in practically the same situation! I've just moved from Scarborough to Durham. I'm keeping my horse on DIY in plawsworth but moving as hacking is terrible (have A roads on both sides, and have to cross a busy dual carriageway) and also my uni has events and stuff on at Ivesley. So I'm moving my horse to Ivesley, which is further to travel, but worth it for the facilities. Indoor, outdoor, XC courses, rubber matting, auto waterers, and all year turnout.

I'm a bit further south than Durham though (Darlington).

It's always scary moving somewhere new... perhaps we should organise an HHO get together to welcome you to the area?
