Hi,

I am moving my loan horse after summer and need a new livery yard in Leeds, preferably near to Headingly/Horsforth. Tried Adelwood which are not taking any and Owlet, which haven't been responding.

Would ideally like a school and to be able to do DIY with occasional part-livery. Does anyone know any? Thanks!

The only ones I know are north leeds - on the A61 as you drive towards harrogate. About 3 miles out of Leeds (past the boys grammar school) on the LHS is a big dressage/livery yard (forget the name now) and further north in Weeton is another which I can give you the details of if you're interested. Both very nice, professionally run yards but probably at the pricier end of the spectrum. Near Harewood (turn right opposite harewood house and about 2 miles on the RHS downa long drive) is a cheaper yard which I think is all DIY.

You could try Lantwood, next door to Owlett, they do a few diy and definitely offer part livery, Moss House, opposite Lantwood but not sure they do any part livery, there is a very small private yard opposite Owlett, Lingbob, diy only, and several more yards in Horsforth depending on how much you want to pay.

There is a stables in Headingley, on the road to Meanwood but I can't remember what it is called. There is a huge yard at Rodley but again I don't really know what they offer and several more Calverley way.

Hi, yeah just enquired earlier about Lantwood prices, need to call them to find out about facilities etc but they have 2 spaces! Will check the others out, especially the Headingly one which would be easier. Thanks! :)

Lantwood have recently had a change of management, it was a big showjumping/competition yard and so still has all the facilities that went with that, arena, horsewalker etc. It is quite a nice place and the guy who runs it now appears to be a nice bloke. There is also Springfield farm but I think they only do full livery, again a really nice place with nice people. Other than the one that used to be a riding school (and I really wish I could remember the name of it!) I don't know of any others in Headingley, but there is another place just above Adel Wood, although I think accessed from Meanwood. I'm not sure whether you drive or not but there is a bus comes past the end of Scotland Lane at Horsforth, where most of the yards are, also the train station is close, there are loads of Footpaths from there to most of the yards through the fields. Ah, there is also Inghams farm just past Owlett, has a school but not sure about them doing part livery. It may be worth joining the Horsforth Riding Club facebook page and asking on there about where there are vacancies.

I think the first one is Wikefield Farm - only know it from competing there years ago. Seemed like a nice place. I know OF the other two, but not much about them.

Hi thanks, I have messaged Lantwood about a space in september, which I'm not sure they will do! It sounds really nice except it's £35 a week but me and my boyfriend share so it's really only half that. ;) Don't suppose you know what hacking is like?
I sadly don't drive but live near burley station and as my boyfriend lives in Horsforth, I can get the train up it's not long. Thanks for all the suggestions, I need to write them all out with prices/distance as I'm getting all confused. :p I will join Horsforth riding club facebook now thanks.

TBH the hacking is not brilliant! There are loads of nice hacks near but the roads to get to them, especially Scotland Lane, can be a bit hairy if you are nervous. Ours are all brilliant on the roads so it doesn't worry me but the drivers can be stupid, drive too fast on the narrow road etc. Many local riders hack out with no problem whatsoever and there are some really nice rides once you get to them.

There's the riding school (or used to be?) Adel Wood, but there was never any stables :mad:The one that is above the ring road, basically the back of Adel towards sainsburys- I lasted about 6 weeks there! :cool:Wouldn't recommend it- IMO some might love it!! I liked Grange, at Arthington, but probs not great if your're getting the train as it's down a huuuge hill! Where do you live near Burley station? I used to live on NOrwood Terrace- small world!

Swithens has fantastic on-site hacking and good links to bridle paths. Also there is a horse walker, indoor and outdoor area, on-site feed and tack shop, monthly competitions and shows all year round, visiting instructors for every level, the list is endless! I cannot recommend this yard enough, I've been a livery for 2 years and haven't once had a problem!

Wikefield farm is ok - but lost all but one of its outdoor arenas (it had four I think) due to planning permissions I think, which is why they haven't had any comps for years.

The other one down the Harewood Road mentioned above is Newlaithes Farm I wouldn't touch. The yard is ok looking (I have only ever stabled a pony there overnight) but the farmer spread all kinds of cr*p on his land and ploughs it in and feeds his cows waste chocolate etc etc which just makes the place stink!

Did Lantwood used to be owned/run by Tim O'Hara?

It's still owned by Tim's parents, not sure if Tim as well though. Tim must have moved onto pastures new I think because he doesn't run it now. I always liked Tim, he was a good bloke and a brilliant instructor!

I think Lantwood is run by a guy called Michael Jarman now. Could be wrong though!

I've found this on the board at work, if its the place I think it is, it's in walking distance of Menston station:

Private yard between Ilkley and Otley now taking a limited number of liveries *turnout *horse walker * sand schooling pen * 100 acres grassland

DIY from £20 per week, DIY, Part and Full available.

Please tel 07980 301808

Sounds great! I have stumbled on them before, it does look good just thinking it might be a bit far out for us both. Worth a look though. :D

Hi,

Just stumbled across this as I'm also looking for a livery yard in the Headingley/Horsforth area, but haven't actually found myself anywhere to live yet either so can be flexible!

Does anyone know of any smaller private yards? My pony currently lives at home with my parents and it's our own field so very small and quiet, and she has a tendency to get stressed out by change and start scratching her fur offf! (Happened when I first went to uni and then again when her companion had to be put to sleep)

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks xx

Are you at Uni at the moment? That's why I am looking for a yard in Sept, going in to my 2nd year! Hoping a yard will take me in september!

Hi Jaybe,

I've been at uni in Leeds for the last four years, graduating this summer and planning to stay in Leeds to work. I've got a bit of knowledge of the area but no idea about where to keep horses round here so I'm trying to find somewhere I can live that will have a good choice of yards in case one doesn't work out.

Which uni are you at? It's nice to know there's someone else in a similar boat so will keep you updated if I find anything else out! x

I'm at Leeds Met, my boyfriend is at Leeds Trinity which is why we are looking for livery in Horsforth! Lantwood have 2 spaces at the moment and he said it's £35 a week for DIY which is a bit pricey but better than nothing! http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001896474217

Recognise a lot of place names here. I used to ride at Lingbob when it was a riding school and I was a student nearly 40 years ago! It was quite busy then so I hate to think what it's like now. We had some great rides cantering about in the woods though.

Hello All

I am looking for a yard west of Leeds and wondered if anyone had the phone numbers for the places mentioned in this thread.

Roundhay Grange farm
Adelwood
Owlet
Swithens Farm
Lantwood
Moss House

I currently live in Nottingham and finding it difficult to find a yards as not all advertise online.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I think Adel equestrian centre (further out from Headingley on the Headingley road do livery. Had a few lessons there but didn't think much of their selection of horses, but their livery might be fine. (Think it's the same place as you're calling Adelwood, might well have been called that but can't remember).

There's also a yard out near the airport (right under the flight path), I looked at a horse for loan there a couple of years ago, if I remember correctly it was dead cheap. Dean farm, Dean lane farm, Dean something or other?

I did my degree in Leeds, and I'm now in Sheffield. I can tell you which I prefer, and it's not Leeds :p

Lantwood is in Horsforth but expensive I believe, you could try Wadlands or Lowes near Rodley. They would be best if you like hacking as its fantastic hacking area
