We are almost certainly moving to the Peak District this coming summer. I am already stressing about where my boy will live. Can HHOers help me with suggestions and recommendations for good, reliable livery yards? We are not sure exactly where we will be in the area as yet, and I know it's early days, but I want to begin to get an idea of what is about.
I would need a yard that offers some services - morning turnout and full cover one weekend in four so that we can visit an elderly relative. My boy is a laid-back cob who is easy to manage from a yard owners point of view ( easy to lead, catch, feed etc., calm nature, not wound up by other horses, respectful of electric fence/tape). As it happens, the two yards we have been on during the last 12 years have both been the sort that turn out in individual paddocks in bigger fields - he can go out with other horses, having spent the first 10 years in this country in a field of 15 geldings, but I will be wary of a big group nowadays as he is now much older and I would obviously not want him to be picked upon. I would like him to have as much turnout opportunity as possible, so he can keep moving all day.
We don't need school facilities really, but have always hacked out and still do so some off road riding would be great, though the care, field and box facilities for him are more important.
I would be really grateful for genuine recommendations - thanks in advance!

The Peak District is quite large - it might be better to wait until you have an idea of the area you will be moving to. Otherwise you're just going to get a very random selection of yards in a very random selection of locations! I'm originally from the section of the Peak District nearest to Manchester, in the Dark Peak. It's a lovely area, but can be exceptionally wet and, in winter, pretty bitter, especially up on the hills. I love it though, it's where I want to settle down when I finally do. Certainly where I am from individual turnout is rare if not unheard of and turnout groups tend to be fairly large. But it may be different elsewhere.

Thanks for your reply, Hashrouge. Yes, I realise the full area is large, but we really are looking in quite a wide section from Oughtibridge and the Bradfields in the northeast, across to Flash and Hartington in the west, and down to Matlock, Winster, Biurchover etc in the south.
I am not looking forward to the colder temperatures for my boy, but we are on the east coast so it can be quite windswept here too.
I wouldn't insist on individual turnout, just that he is currently used to it.

Moorwood Equine! Used to be a riding school but now just livery. My loan pony is kept there and I really do love it, great hacking, indoor and outdoor arena plus individual or paired turnout in a large field. It's near the edge of the Peak District, close to Bradfield - does get a bit chilly in the winter unfortunately!! Take a look at their Facebook or website :-)

Can give you some places but it's a huge area so don't no any further than ten miles from where I am- all the other places I wouldn't of heard of anymore than you have :) let us know when you know where your going . Try n avoid flash it's highest place and bloody wild lol I live 5 mile
From there and I wouldn't move my horse there x

Thanks loads for your replies! I know it sounds random not having a specific area but it will kind of depend upon what we can afford within a broad area from Hartington up to Oughtibridge across to Bamford and down to Matlock. Will certainly let you know, Dallas, when we know for sure, and will look up Moorwood Equine, Hannah, straight away! I know it seems like I'm looking too early, but this is a major, major issue for me around moving, as I know it would be for you all. Dallas, can you suggest one or two of the places you know so I can begin to get a feel for areas, and livery types, charges etc. Thanks again!

large diverse area OP. you'll find top of the range and rock bottom in those areas. choose carefully. somewhere near Chatsworth would give you great hacking and more upmarket facilities.

I am on edge of Peak District, North Staffs area. There are some lovely hacking areas around, plenty of off road trails etc. I think you should find the right place to live and know what your commute will be then we can give you more info.
I am sure you will find the right place for your boy it is a very horsey area. As for quality of life it's great! So many lovely places, Bakewell, Ashbourne. My Son and DIL moved to Matlock and found lots going on and made friends easily.

Summer (June -July etc) is a long way off and vacancies will change a lot between then and now , you may be better re threading April time when you have a better idea of area i will be able to advise you re Bradfield / Oughtibridge area nearer the time.

Thanks to all of you! neddy man and adopter - I will be saving this thread so that I can get back in touch when we have more idea. Although even tho we are not sure at present I wanted to start to understand what is around which is why I posted now. It's good to know there are people out there who are going to understand what I am looking for and give an honest opinion. Xx

I know of two lovely yards in the area. One in Biggin by Hartington and the other near Ashford in the Water. Both have lovely YOs and good facilities and my horses were very hapy and settled on both yards. PM if you want contact details :)
