I am sat at home waiting for the washing to finish before I can go out (rock and roll life style that I lead

) and was chatting to a friend of mine about livery yards... so I thought it would make an interesting post!

1) What do you need to be available at a livery yard?

2) What would you class as a luxury at a livery yard?

3) Are you happy where you are at the moment?

4) What would make you leave your current livery yard?

I just think it is interesting when visiting various competition yard the differences you see... I have been to some which are absolutely beautiful to look at, have the horse walker, spa, solarium etc etc and then you go to others which have stunning horses, but the basics only as in stables, arena, turnout.

need- safe grazing, safe stables, and school
luxury- rolling green post and rail paddocks, full size olympic arena, horse walker, on site XC course
am i happy- no not really!! we have a prima donna at the yard who makes things very difficult
what would make me leave- a reoccurence of the sand school situation that ended with me in tears and prima donna mum screamin at me

I need turnout at least in summer, a school a stable! some hacking nearby some roadwork. Someone knowledgable and storage for tack also essential.

Luxury show jumps, off road hacking, knowledgeable owner on site, xc jumps, horse walker...

NEED: A nice big stable, all-year turnout (in at night in winter tho), a lovely BIG rubber menage. Peace and Quiet. Not far from home.

HAVE: A nice big stable, fairly good turnout, a crappy not-looked after school that needs more rubber and has rats living under it in the corner, rats in the stables, bloody noisy children. I live in a cottage ON the yard although its nothing to do with me but it is lovely to do Gen and just go home.

I am NOT happy at the moment and have honestly thought of leaving. I would love to move to a quieter place with a decent school but there is nothing really that close to me thats worth moving too.

Tell me about it. Luckily my stable is rat free but my friends is horrible atm. She has tried to block all the holes by putting more wood over etc but they just chew through again. The rats under the school happened cos they decided to feed the pony right next to it. We actually had a hole and a bit of the surface collapse cos of it.

If I could find a nice place that didnt cost me a fortune I would move like a shot.

I need somewhere that my horse is happy (which is anywhere as long as hes fed to be honest!), i need a stable, field and school.
I was at hartpury and would consider that pretty luxury (if it wasnt for the lack of turnout!) loved riding in that big school!
at the moment i love the yard im on, just wish it was closer! Have a lovely yard manager, amazing hacking, a nice enough school and all year turnout. dont think my horse has ever been happier!!

Need: Safe & secure stabling. Safe & secure grazing. Indoor arena.

Have: Safe, secure grazing & stabling. Indoor & outdoor arena. Cross Country course. Use of Showjumps. On site instruction if needed. In the region of 80 acres off road riding that leads up onto the Cotswold Hills. Friendly & helpful YO who helps as much as she can if she can. Really friendly fellow liveries, all of which help each other out as & when they can if needed. Lots of Pony Club activities also going on through the year & tons to do in the summer.

Apart from the grazing, arena & stabling I class all of the above as luxury beyond belief. It's an amazing yard & it would have to be drastic to make me leave I can tell you!!!

Have also been on a livery yard that was hell on earth, tack theft that you couldn't prove by fellow liveries, more & more unkempt as time went on, to the point where the fencing was left to fall down (meaning I had to stable mine for fear of what would happen if I left her out) & the final straw was when a field full of ponies escaped onto the main road. Luckily my horse was in at the time but she was moved the next morning with no warning & cancellation of livery.

Need- A happy horse. turnout, nice stables, peace and quiet, good YO and an arena. As from 2 weeks time I need full livery!

luxury - hot water, heat lamps, indoor school.

Am I happy? - Ask me in a few weeks when YO has found his feet. Im not a big fan of change.

Leave - Filthy beds, horse not cared for properly, jumps left out in the school, unhappy horse.

Ive been at my yard 6 years so there must be something I like about it. I'm just waiting to see what happens next.

I'm fairly straight forwards, I need a stable, grazing and somewhere that isn't grass to ride.

I have all of the above, 2 menages, the smallest is bigger than 20x40m but can't remember the exact measurements, a roundpen, indoor wash box with hot water, brilliant hacking

I would adore access to some XC jumps and solarium lights but really I don't want for anything

All I don't like about my yard is some of the other liveries, but recently its come to light its a very small clique compared to the rest of the yard, and they are loosing their 'hold' over people

1) Big, dry stable, all year turnout on reasonable/good grass, YO/staff who know their stuff and I can trust my horse with, decent hay and somewhere safe + flat to ride

2) Solarium, heated wash box, indoor school, proper xc course, warm/dry owners room

3) The horse is happy therefore I'm happy!

4) Loss of turnout, or if his bed gets any thinner lol! If anyone endangered my horse at any yard, through being stupid or careless, I'd be off like a shot, my horse is more than capable of breaking itself without assistance!

1) What do you need to be available at a livery yard?
Safe grazing, decent sized stables, water, electricity/good lighting (you'd be suprised!), someone knowledgable on site (pref. 24/7), a school with a half decent surface, a set of jumps and somewhere safe to keep tack.

2) What would you class as a luxury at a livery yard?
Solarium, Wash boxes, Indoor school, A loo (should really be standard!), Menage bigger than 20x40m or indoor school, XC course.

3) Are you happy where you are at the moment?
Yep, i'm the only livery which saves hassle but it can be quiet at times. There's decent grazing all year, a school which is a little sloping but usable, jumps including a bank complex in the field, Gov has a foaling box for a stable.

4) What would make you leave your current livery yard?
Not much really, particularly as its slowly being 'done up' too. YO is fairly invaluable with Gov too.

Ewww... I couldn't cope with rats. I know every yard the world over has them, but wouldn't like so see them a lot

Thanks everyone for your comments so far... it seems most people look for similar things, and many would like the same things as luxury items

Forgot to add...i'd really quite like some arena mirrors too.

Bit of a luxury, but I don't have nearly enough lessons and it'd be good to see just how wrong i'm getting it!

1) What do you need to be available at a livery yard?
Arena, daily turnout 7 days a week, safe quality fencing, safe airy large stable, friendly YO and other livery clients. Back up for when I need Part or full livery. Luckily I have this at the yard where I am as friend is YO. Riding is dismal though, main road to country lanes and no off road. I don't hack out anymore, too many close incidents.

2) What would you class as a luxury at a livery yard?
A solarium, wash box and indoor school.

3) Are you happy where you are at the moment? Yes very happy, no problems. I've had excellent back up and support from YO and other liveries. YO happy to school my horse if my confidence dips.

4) What would make you leave your current livery yard? If the YO sold up and I didn't like new owners or I won the lottery and could afford my own place with luxuries!

Need: 24h TO with good fencing, floodlit school, good hacking, nice people, jumps, stable, electricity.

Luxury- Indoor school, wash box, full livery, horse walker, amazing hacking on beach or something, XC course, lots of show jumps and really bright large school
smile.gif

Happy? Yeh pretty much, would love for it to be closer though
frown.gif

What would make you leave?
If horse could load, and I had a trailer, would consider moving, as I would be able to get to shows etc, but I can hack to some from here. Umm if I found a cheaper, better closer yard on the bus route I may move, but thats not going to happen.

Essentials: All year turnout, flexibility to leave them out 24/7 in the summer, decent large light stables, and now I wouldn't be without a floodlit school.

Luxury: XC fences, arena mirrors, large or indoor arenas, hot water, solarium etc etc.

Happy where we are, could do with better hacking but luckily my horses are both good with traffic and you can get to better areas with a bit of roadwork first. Its pretty good tho, school nice, and best of all get on very well with all other liveries.

Not sure what would make me move really, maybe if the prices went up significantly without according improvements in facilities.

1) What do you need to be available at a livery yard?
Knowledgeable experienced staff - I have a horse who can be difficult to handle and at a previous yard he got loose three times in one week after the Y/O let a work experience girl handle him. Needless to say I left.
Big stable.
Safe individual turnout - need not be all day every day but must be regular, say every other day or half day. Must be individual as horse isn't friendly!
Good school with good surface

2) What would you class as a luxury at a livery yard?
Would love a horsewalker (classed it as a necessity until I moved to one without two months ago)
Big school, i.e. 20m by 60m (a necessity if horse in competition work) with floodlights
Off road hacking
Lunging arena

3) Are you happy where you are at the moment?
Yes happy, although horse is currently out of work due to injury. Once back in work might have to consider moving as the current school isn't suitable and there is no hacking. Although hopefully a new second 70m by 30m outdoor arena will be built within the next six months.

4) What would make you leave your current livery yard?
A change in Y/O. She's the reason we are at the yard. Moved with her from previous yard which was lovely, had all my above luxury facilities but sadly was owned by a not so nice person who chucked us all out with very little notice. Also if the turnout became unsafe or I couldn't have individual turn out. If I couldn't choose my own farrier or vet. If I couldn't choose my own feed.
