Hi all,

I have finally given in to the OH and am moving to Essex with him. Have sorted out hair extensions, fake tan, boob job etc (just kidding before I get lynched) but need to find a home for the hairy grey one.

I need full livery (damn, damn work) and the more facilities the better. Most importantly though is that Dougal will be well cared for and the other liveries are friendly.

Does anyone know of such a place, i've had a quick peek on the net but haven't seen much.

Thanks very much. Nat. xx

If you can stretch to Bumbles Green/Nazing try Harolds Park Farm. Good facilities and a livery service. Big yard - about 80 stables, real mixture of people and horses, XC course, 3 schools, horsewalker, lorry parking.

I do miss the facilities, but as Cairo got older he needed a small yard with more winter turnout - his old joints could not cope with the horse walker and they do close the fields for several weeks at a time in winter.

I escaped from the Epping Forest area twenty odd years ago but I still keep in touch with the yard manager at Woodlands, in Sewardstone Road, where my horse was stabled for twelve years. Nice, tidy yard (quite a few rules in my day!), horses are VERY well fed, indoor school plus outside arena. Think they have a horsewalker now, too. Regular dressage competitions. Turnout used to be restricted in the winter but I believe they now turn out all year (I may be wrong). Ring 020 8529 2532 and ask for Mrs Jenner or Val.

Another yard which springs to mind is Woodridden in Woodreddon Hill, Loughton. (Think I've got the two strangely similar but not identical spellings correct!). They have lots of facilites and direct access to Epping Forest. We know the owners, the Butcharts, through Pony Club when they lived in Herts.

"In my day" (I'm SOOO old now!) there were numerous yards in the area, but I don't know what yards are still going and what new ones have sprung up! I can say that the two I've mentioned are worth a call, though. Good luck!

There is a lovely yard at Amesbury Mead on sewardstone road just north of chingford. Mainly showing ponies, but well looked after. Small yard 20x40 arena, all year turnout and very friendly owners. You can hack in to the forest but have to do 10/15 mins roadwork first.

Gardens of Hanbury on Pynest green lane has direct forest access and do full livery. In the winter turnout is twice a week, in the summer the turnout is very extensive I am told. The arena is very small though - good place if you are more into hacking than anything else.

Brownings Farm on gravel lane near chigwell I have heard is good, but not visited myself. Multiple arenas, and hacking in hainault forest.

There is also Bower farm in Havering atte Bower which has daily turnout through the summer and 2/3 times a week in the winter. Again I haven't visited, but i think there are multiple arenas and the hacking is very extensive with little need for roadwork in havering country park, hainault forest, farm tracks on the livery land and lots of bridleways in the stapleford abbots/abridge area.

There are lots of little yards in the area - i've been doing some research into it as i live in east london, but sadly either horrible or too pricey for me at the moment. Lots of yards I have seen/heard about I would not even consider keeping a horse at - pokey stables, hardly any turnout, thousands of other liveries, psycho owners and so on and so on!

That sounded great but I do need all year turnout. Dougal is not a good horse to be kept in. Turns into a rodeo horse!

This is turning into a bigger job than I thought. it's hard since I just don't know the area. Perhaps I need to find a local feed shop and look on a notice board.

Thanks so much for the reply. x

Thank you for that, I've tried the first one but they have a waiting list and don't offer full which is a shame. I'll call the one in Loughton today and see if they have any vacancies.

Many thanks for your help.x

Thank you so much for your help. This is turning out to be far more difficult than I thought. It's hard when you really don't know an area at all and since I don't know anyone around there either it's doubly hard. I'll try the ones you have suggested though, fingers crossed.

Have you found anywhere yet? x
