So, I'm heading off to do my second degree next year, this time in Nursing :) My parents have said that I can keep my boy - largely because I said we can't palm him off to someone else after only having him for a year, knowing full well when we bought him that I was going away for three years. I know nursing is a very taxing VERY full time course, which is why I can't stay at home anymore, but I'm allowed to bring him with me :D

I have a short list of universities, but I need to think of finances now! I've worked out ho much bursary and loan I can get (If I fluff it a little and say I live with my dad :rolleyes: Don't tell SFE!) The universities are:
Northampton (Obviously Moulton College near by and very reasonable livery prices - but very limited time for using the facilities)
Nottingham (have no idea what's near the medical center)
Hertfordshire (Hatfield area)
Bedford, Aylesbury campus :)

Anyone livery their horses in these areas? What prices? What's included? Local competition centers? Trailer parking?

Looking at DIY or Part Livery :)
 
Oo I might pm you. I've been looking at nursing as a second degree too! I was looking at Surrey uni as its 20mins away and I can live at home. I didn't think you could get any bursarys or loans with a second degree though and that was putting me off as I reckoned I couldn't work much in between the course and couldn't financially afford it and my horse and rent. I will watch this thread with interest!
 
Teesside does nursing and my livery is £10 a week :D Better yards with more facilities are about £20 a week, usually with a really good deal to include hay and straw for a tenner. If your basing it on where is best and cheapest to keep a horse, Teesside wins hands down :d
 
Hertfordshire is expensive, unless you are on DIY, which I guess you'd be too busy to do. Lots of yard near Hatfield, though, if you can do it and nice hacking.
 
Nothing is really close from the medical centre in Nottingham and the nearest one is about seven miles away which in rush hour traffic can still take an hour to get there.
 
I'm based in Hertfordshire, I moved here for work 6 years ago from the south west and I've found it expensive, even on diy.
I am based on a yard with quite a few facilities though, so you could probably get your costs down if you didn't want a school, horsewalker, additional services etc.
 
My daughter is doing her second year nursing at Anglian Ruskin. She works in he spare time as a carer, its not well paid but there's loads of work. There are a lot of livery yards round Cambridge and although they are not at the cheaper end there is loads to do.
The only time you would struggle is when you are on placement and a lot of wards do 12 hour shifts which if you include travel time could make it a 15 hour day. I am also a qualified nurse and have been surprised of the amount of time she has not on the ward, plus they have normal uni holidays, hence she can work as carer,
DIY around here starts at £25

Ideally I'd like assisted DIY so that when I'm on placement I can have help with just feeding in morning or evening if I need it. Also a flood lit arena is a must so I can ride when it's dark.

How much do you pay in Hertfordshire?
 
I'm in herts and last winter I was on assisted diy as I work shifts and I was paying £411 per month on a yard with 2 schools and a horsewalker. That included 2 feeds, 1 night haynet and turn out and bring in and rugs changed. I still had to muck out and ride and if I wanted more hay that was also included but you had to do it yourself.
There are yards that are cheaper though, I'm moving to another yard this winter which is diy with a school and walker and you used the yard services as you need them, which should work out slightly less per month.

I dont livery my ponies but i live in Northamptonshire and would say thats likely to be the cheapest place on your list.
 
My other daughter did a fashion degree at Northampton, cheaper living costs, don't know about livery. She did find work but that was before the recession, but if you have a car and sign up with an agency you should be able to get care work.
