This is to yard owners/managers really but would appreciate other views on it as well.

When someone hands in their notice at your yard and say they are going on the 16th March, what date do you have the new person move in?

Ie I had someone leave last month on the 26th in the morning, disenfected box etc in afternoon and new horse moved in 27th afternoon.

But recently I have had a person give their notice (for their 2 horses) that they were going on the 16th Feb, unfortunately one of them damaged their tendon sheath on the 10th so they said they were unable to move, fortunately the person moving in to their box isnt coming until the 1st March (and they have paid for it from then) so want to move their bedding etc (understandably) in so it is ready for when she bring her horse on the 8th march.

This means the original 2 who were supposed to go only now have one stable between them so I have said the one not on box rest can be on field keep until they move which is now the 16th march (are you still following)
I however had now had interest in the last box empty (which lame horse is still in) and they want a date that they can move their horse in so I feel like im constantly hassling the owner who is there at the moment when he is leaving and cant give the new livery a definate date.

What do you do in this situation? I feel I have been very lenient on them as if both their boxes had been taken from the day they left I would have had to make them leave, lame horse or not but just wondered what others would do

*Large box of choc if you got this far*

I would just double check they are leaving on the 16th and taking the lame horse and tell your new livery 1st april as moev in date as a back up!

its not that lame, it damaged its tendon sheath and has been in for 3 weeks now and seems to be walking round box happily

cant put new livery date back really as shes given in her notice to be going on the 8th so dont want the same to happen at her yard!

would any of you made them leave on the date they originally said?

My horse badly damaged its tendon sheath last year and i travelled it 2hr to the vets and back when it first injured itself Id ask them to leave on the original date.

I think you've been extremely accomodating! I would ask for a definite date and then allow an extra week before the other person comes, just in case.

Do you know how far away the lame horse is moving? If it is still ok to travel and they are not going far, and the new people were desperate to come sooner, I don't see why you couldn't ask them to leave on the date that was initially agreed. I'm sure they should see it from your point of view.

If you have a contract which states a months notice, then they have a month to vacate the box. They can go any time in that month, but must pay the full notice period i.e. if they gave their notice in on 1st Feb, they have until 1st March to move out. If they stated they were going on the 16th but have now changed their minds, you can tell them that they have until the 1st to go. Hope this makes sense!

you have been really good about it - why cant they move the non injured horse and leave the other !!

Also you need to tell them that you have someone new for the stable and the date the person wants to move in by - you cant be fairer than that !!
