livery yards - who do you complain to?

I thought, and that was dangerous, that I'd read that muck heaps shouldn't leak into the ground with a ditch, at most 15/20' away but I could be wrong. Also, there is a metal 'ramp' up to the trailer that you slide off, No loo - there are approx 20 people coming onto the premises all have crossed legs, Fencing is all electric tape without a sign anywhere. Do you complain to H&S, Trading Standards, Defra. I pay £30 pw for this. Is this the norm? I would love to move but can't find anywhere else :-(
 
is it a BHS approved livery yard??? If it is you should def approach them if not....im not sure...


Also just thinking...Im not sure not having a loo would be anything that anybody would do anything about, and I think electric tape only has to signed if members of the public might come across it e.g on a footpath and as you are renting off the yard owner it is up to them to tell you... Again not sure
 
I think, that the things you are complaining about are just part and parcel of the yard.

Were these things not the same when you moved there? Ie has the muck heap been moved? the ramp been changed? Have they taken the toilet away? Do you and the other horse owners not realise electric fencing is electric, that is only really necessary if you have a public footpath through the land.

If you have issues you should discuss with YO/YM, persumably you are not contracted to stay there and therefore if you don't like it, move

I think EandJ hjas a point - were these things in place when you moved to this yard? So, was there a loo when you moved in, that has now been removed? For me, having a decent loo is one of my "essentials" when choosing a yard. I don't like weeing in the stable, never have done, and all three yards that I have been on have had decent loos.

Electric fencing should have a sign but - its your yard, so you KNOW that the fencing is electric!

Its very very rare that a place only has one yard. Perhaps it would be worth looking a bit further away,. to get the standard of facilities that you need.
 
a loo thats luxuary lol I think most ppl would agree with me that when caught short up the yard just go in your stable. ood old horsey ways lol

but i absolutely positively had to go one day when i was at my field, miles away from a loo

went behind a bush but i was mortified, some of the horses obviously wondered where id gone and came to find me, like a REALLY embarrassing hide-and-seek

i had to carry on, despite babyhorses head down to mine, going 'what-ya-doing ma?'...
 
I agree there should be facilities to be able to use the toilet on livery yards. Somewhere to wash your hands too as its hygiene! If people can charge 30p/w i think that a toilet is an essential. We have all been on yards where there are no loo facilities and to be honest just got used to it. Some people travel miles to see there horses and should be able to use the loo!
At my old yard i spoke to the farmer about the toilets (lack of) as he promised there would be one. He laughed at me and walked off! When i explained that a woman needed the use of a proper toilet more than a man again he just laughed, i paid 26p/w for the privilidge of piddling on my horses bed!
TBH the guy was a total arse and when he refused to help a foal that had trapped itself between a post and a gate (and subsequently broke his neck) i ceased to be a tennant on the yard.
The place i am at now is great, toilet school and run by people who own horses and care about them,
i did look on net about yard owners providing loos but i dont think its a necessity. In the workplace it is so maybe if there are people working there you would have to get them to complain?
Failing that keep looking for alternatives, something always comes up. Good luck x
 
£30? Is this DIY?

We have electric fencing everywhere, it's actually cattle fencing so a higher charge but no signs. I think these were only required if members of the public would be on the land.

As for toilet, we are very lucky

We have a portacabin with two toilets, a kitchnette area with sink, microwave and fridge as well as a sitting area which we put sofas/chairs and a TV into

I was on a yard once that had no loos, got desperate one evening, so in corner of stable with joddies round ankles, when horse decided to get down and roll

So there I am, trapped in the corner with with hooves coming within inches of me!!

Could just picture the headlines in the local paper- Half naked woman found dead in stable

Glad to say current yard has very nice clean loo!
