Help, any opinions pls: Yd has banned dogs from from owners vehicles at the yard because they dont like dogs. We now have to leave because we wont leave our dog at home. We live too far away. The yard has public right of way footpaths which dog walkers use so no control orders are in place.

You can't have the dog in your car?! Thats mental! Can you talk to the YO? If there are footpath, why the heck are the they doing this? I dont think they can do this by law, they can't control what's in your car.

Can't you park on the road outside and walk in?
They are being a bit extreme but I can sort of see their point.
My son's cat was ripped apart by two greyhounds that jumped out of the window of the farrier's truck. (yes aged 8 he watched it happen)
My own stipulation is dogs must be fairly quiet and not chase horses or my cats, regardless of this we end up with both cats chased by liveries' dogs on more than one occasion.
Sadly some dog owners have a sort of blind spot regarding their dogs and their faults, and yes if I am honest I would like to ban all dogs from my yard. I have threatened it once after treading in dog poo not picked up in the dark and after that people picked up after their pets.
I think I would just park on the road if that's possible, and they probably won't say anything to you..

I hate to see gangs of rude dogs at livery yards (and I know there are well behaved ones!) and I would never take my own to a yard as he can be a bit of an arse - but what harm are they doing in a car?! My fella can sit for hours in his car-cave and not a peep out of him....I have had him at Colleen's yard and he was in the car mostly and on lead in one of the fields with no horses in but I wouldn't risk him on a busy yard.

I would be wary about parking on the road for the reason FF mentioned.

Ditto FF, no way would I park my dogs on the road, for safety first and foremost and heat in the summer.
I would be leavin the yard, I am affraid, fair do's re bad mannered dogs but why penalise the good dogs?
Or get a doggy van like mine and you cannot see the dogs in the car:D

Great care needs to be taken re dogs in cars even in warm weather. They can only lose heat through their pads & tongues (they haven't the sweat glands we have) plus they are wearing fur coats. Cars can heat up very quickly when the weather changes & if you are off on a 2 hour hack what then ?

I would leave my dog in the car at the yard if i was just going up to do chores, but not if i was going hacking etc,so agree with polldark

Hands up. This happened to me. Farmer didn't allow dogs loose on yard because of his own dogs. Was ok to leave them in car. Set out on a hack when it was chilly and overcast. Weather turned and became warm and sunny.
Got a text off a friend to say she hoped I didn't mind but she'd taken them out and put them in a stable. Felt terrible, not only because poor dogs were hot but because friend had been faced with the dilemma of taking action and risk offending me.

Regarding the OP's situation, if you need to bring the dogs with you, find a dog friendly yard. Its the YO's right to make the rules and yours to vote with your feet and hooves. If the YO chose to ban all owners with pink cars, I guess he could.

Am very lucky at my yard dog allowed on premises, if I see doggy foo I always pick it up even though it isn't mine. When I go riding I pop him in the back of the truck (pick up) which has blacked out windows and he is vet cool in his "pimp mobile". He can be a pain as he steals carrots out of feed buckets which I find embarrassing but then everyone feeds him carrot ad he I'd very good at waving a paw around for them. I can understand YO attitude, I am just very lucky with mine. :D

I do not allow dogs on my yard, I don't care if they stay in the vehicles that's fine, but not running around on my yard.

I have other Boarders to consider, some with children, one of them is blind, another is in a wheelchair, then there are the barn cats and the goats etc, not to mention my own dogs who are here to guard (and they aren't loose on the yard). I don't consider it unreasonable to state 'No dogs'

I was told in no uncertain terms yesterday that I would lose prospective clients if I enforced that rule. Apparently this person thought I would enjoy having a doberman running around my place at will...I directed her up the road to another barn I know.

If I was a YO and I didn't like dogs I would also be telling people they couldn't have them there... In fact I DO like dogs but I would probably have no dog policy on my yard if I had one.
It's their home and business so their choice. I can't stand dogs running about getting in the way or yapping in cars so I can see their point!

Why take your dogs to the yard and then lock them in the car for hours??

Wouldn't they be better being left at home, with their food and water and comfy beds??

Mine come to the yard all the time if I'm not riding. Big dog ignores everyone and hunts rabbits, pups play and get socialised. Zak will be lead walked there now.

Love dogs but not on yards and that includes YO dogs. Horses and dogs do NOT mix no matter what people say and are an accident waiting to happen.

I can see no reason to take a dog and then leave it in the car....surely at home would be better for everyone?

Mmm, difficult one innit.

As a YO myself I am quite happy for people to have dogs in the yard, BUT they have to be "under control" which means just that, as we've got sheep & lambs in the field outside the stables plus chicken. So we've got zero tolerance of any dog chasing anything, can't be otherwise here.

Dogs in cars pose a problem and TBH isn't something I'd want anyone to do at my place; simply because if the owner leaves Fido in the car and goes off riding, or to a show, or whatever, and Fido gets anxious, or too hot, and starts getting agitated, then as a YO I might have a scenario where a concerned member of the public either comes in to me ranting about dogs left in the car, OR phones the RSPCA and I get them here, either thing I deffo wouldn't want. No way. So I'd be less happy with dogs left in the car than I would be if dogs were in the yard; in fact I'd probably say "no" to it TBH, for the reasons I've given.

The other thing with dogs on yards (sorry to state the obvious) is that some owners are remarkably blind at seeing where their darling has pooped and even slower at getting a shovel to clean it up; YO usually gets lumbered with the job IME.

It might be an idea to try and find out, gently, just why your yard appears very anti-dog? There must be a reason ....

My yard is dog tolerant and I am appreciative - I would not go to a yard where I could not take my dogs and when I am at up late with very few people around, the dogs are worth their weight in gold to make me feel safe. There are no set rules in place - the YO expects me to behave with respect on her yard and to the other liveries and I hope I do. Dogs go straight down the fields as soon as we arrive so ensure no presents left for anyone else. If there are and I have missed it, then have no problem in it being pointed out to me. Mine aren't perfect - they are a little too happy with the meeting and greeting so again, if the yard is busy then I keep them away.

They do stay in the car when I am riding - I ended up buying a crate so can leave all windows/back door open. I keep popping them in and out of the car in between horses and when I am on the yard. They also come to shows with me unless there is a no dogs rule (Oldencraig has a no dogs policy). When its hot I do tend to try to ride earlier or later and park in the shade, just applying some common sense. I could happily turn my back on my bitch because she is always stuck to my side but my dog will go to find someone else to take attention off if I am not paying attention, hence the dogs going constantly in and out of the car!

Dogs on yards are a bit of contentious issue. I personnally hate seeing the dogs on the yard where I keep my horse running about peeing on my hay and pooing everywhere and their owners not picking it up. Some people are good and their dogs don't do this but others are irresponisible (they also are the ones who don't walk their dogs so use their time at the yard as exercise!). I do take Toby up to the yard and most of the time he sits in the car and he loves that. If I go for a ride I put him in my stable so he has access to water and can go to the loo if he wants. I wouldn't want to leave him at home as he has to be in his crate still if I'm out for a long time, he doesn't mind but would rather go for a ride in the car and be with me more. If I go to a show I don't take him either as I usually have too much to do without having him to worry about as well so in those cases he goes in the stable. It is great being able to socialise him with the other dogs on the yard so I would be upset if I couldn't take him at all.

I have just moved from a yard where my dog was allowed to be loose to a yard where dogs are allowed but must be on a lead. My dog is very well behaved, doesn't bother anyone and just follows me around while I am mucking out etc I also used to take her out hacking with me on quiet lanes at the yard I have moved from.

It is obviously not practical to have a dog on a lead when you are trying to muck out and work etc so I take mine in the car because she would much rather that than be left at home on her own and is very happy to sleep in the car. The yard is very close to some lovely walks where I can take her for a good run before or after I go to the yard which is much nicer than the walks from my house. I also often take my dog to work with me and go straight to the yard from work. It would be impossible for me if the yard was to implement such ridiculous rules as banning dogs from you car.

I am fully aware of the dangers of dogs in hot cars and wouldn't dream of leaving mine if it was that warm, If there is really good shade available and the yard is secure enough to leave all the windows wide open then I don't see the problem.

I fear Its the same old story of irresponsible dog owners with bad mannered or vicious dogs creating a bad name and a hard time for those of us who have well mannered dogs, don't cause any problems and always pick up after them!

I wouldn't park on the road and walk in either, risk having your car broken into and dog stolen.

Could you not just talk to YO about banning/talking to owners of the dogs which are causing them to make this rather drastic ruling? Hope they come to their senses or you find somewhere better to go! :)

It's their yard they can make the rules they want and if you don't like it then you have the option to leave. Personally I hate to see dogs left in cars any time of year, and in the summer I will and do ring the police if I see dogs left. I have a van with cages in for my dogs to travel in, but it's not a place to leave them in unattended, that's what my house is for.

Why not just leave them at home if you can't trust them on the yard? 3 of my pack come to the yard, 1 of them can be a little devil sometimes so he's on lead if other liveries are around, the other 2 are quiet gentle and well behaved and people don't mind them pottering around. 1 comes out hacking with me and the other 2 are left in the horses stable while I go out. In the summer they will be left at home as the stable will be too warm to leave them in. The yard isn't there to exercise my dogs in so I see no reason for them come unless it's convient and during hot weather they are better off at home where they have shade and a cool house.

I would just leave my terrier in the car one of the yards I go too has hens, cats and dogs and my girl would just flitter the hens so she stays in the car.
The other yard has two elderly cats so I can't let her out.
She gets walked everyday and when we are in my OH's yard she can run around with his dogs and it's not an issue!!

I don't understand what this yard owner has against dogs in cars.

Sorry just had to reply to the post above from Echodomino, would you like a continually barking dog in your garden belonging to someone else? !!
Can't believe you wrote that, and I do hope you don't have a barking dog yourself, why on earth should other liveries or the yard owner have their life disturbed by a barking dog in someone's vehicle?
The harm is that everyone deserves some peace and quiet to enjoy their time with their horse and in their home, and as such dog owners really should keep them under close control..

I have a yard rented and the guy lets me walk my dogs everyday. My sister has her horses at another yard and is not allowed dogs on the yard.
Each YO is allowed their choice-they own the place?

However if I were to rent a stable out I would be thinking of not allowing other peoples dogs on the yard. I clean up after my pack and im responsible for anything they get upto. Its amazing how often other people dont!

And to leave a dog in the car is just mind boggling? why take it to the yard if its getting left in a car? and although I can see the use of a stable while hacking etc but why leave it in a car? and if your dog is a barker when left then id be going spare! my lot arent left to be annoying to the horses, hens or cattle why would I let someone elses dog do that?

Mine are in and out of their crate in the back of the car all the time. When I am on the yard and can keep an eye on them (AND!) its quiet, then they are out, when I am riding, they go back to their crate and sleep. I walk them as soon as we get up to the yard and small walks in between horses - that works for me, the dogs love coming up to the yard and seeing all their people but I do have to put them back in their crate when I ride due to (as I have said previously) younger boy staffie would go off to find some one else to get attention off. Dogs very happily jump into their crate and I know with complete certaintly, younger one would not get in if he didn't enjoy his time at the yard. He will flatly refuse to go out with my dog walker now even though he adores her - her walks are clearly now too long for him as he has elbow displaysia.

So, agree with earlier posters - respect to the YO and other liveries goes a long way. My dogs are part and parcel of life up at the yard and add greatly to my enjoyment of my time up there. There are quite a few dog owners at our yard and no one leaves their dogs unsupervised or allowed to run riot and mess.
