we bought a pair or liveryman clippers last winter but they are getting so hot in after a few minutes clipping - we oil the regularly, the blades are sharp and we make sure we clear the vent out of hair ect but they get so hot - at the moment we are taking the blades off for a few minuets then continuing but this means it takes ages to do a full clip!! is there something we should be doing to avoid this or do you think it could be a fault with the clippers?

make sure you are not over tightening the blades as this is very common. What I do is loosen them off, then slowly tighten them just enough as they cut the coat, presuming they have been sharpened.
blunt blades can also cause over heating, as above because you will over tighten them to get them to cut

great thank you - thats a goood tip will try the tightening untill they will cut - we've done as the manual said - tighten compleetly then un tighten a certain ammount - blades were shappened not long ago and have only done 8 legs of feather since

I have the liveryman arena clippers, and I had exactly the same problem! After reading a post on here, I loosened the blades right off, then tightened them gradually until they were cutting properly, and managed to do a full clip with no problems whatsoever.

Just a tip, if you are using a Liveryman machine with the pin,nut and spring that come apart, do not tighten the blades tight then back off half a turn. Whilst this is right for a Lister, it will kill your liveryman. Watch the short video I produced for the a different brand and do the same. Also there is a good chance that you have blunted your blades by over tightening them, if you have tightened them all the way down and you may need to re sharpen them before trying again....

Good luck.

I have had these for years and from day one they ran hot they have burnt out several parts inside several times over the years ,i am lucky as hubby is engineer and fixes them but otherwise they would have been binned long ago ,would never have another pair bought some cheap ones off ebay last year and they are so much better .

Over 16 years of working in the clipper repair trade, the biggest problem that crops up is excess heat, mainly because so few people understand how a clipper works, (from an engineering point of view) Many people can clip, but knowing how to clip is only half the battle. Every different brand, tends to have different tension technique, different blades made of lower quality steel get hotter quicker, different oils lubricate less well and so I could go on.

Whatever machine, sharp blades, Sae 30 or similar oil......NOT WD40.......the correct tension for your machine and last but not least, slide your air filter out and hold it up to the light......can you see through it? ......if not, your machine will overheat......if you can't blow it out with an airline, wash them in hot soapy water and blow dry with a hair dryer, then refit. Some machines such as Liveryman mustangs, arena plus and Wolseley harrier or falcon will clog the filter very quick because they need lots of air and the air they need is full of hair particles. A good bit of advice is buy a couple of spare filters and swop whilst clipping, then clean ready for next time.

Always have a minimum of two sets of blades, one set unused as backup for when the ones on your clipper go blunt, this saves much grief. Get your blades sharpened by a professional firm, not a backstreet cowboy and you will have stress free clipping.

IMHO of course.

Top tips... can you tell me how to clean the filter on a set of hauptners? Also the lead at the clipper end is not working fully... it cuts out unless I bend it around, can they be replaced reasonably? Thanks.

TheEngineer, you clearly know your clippers! Thanks for posting - it's useful. I'ver never been entirely convinced with the descriptions of tensioning in the manual with my arena pluses and tend to end up tightening them less than they suggest - more like the level of tightness in your video. Its reassuring to think that might be ok :D

This year I clipped with slighlty blunt blades (lack of organisation and I was aware I was pushing my luck!) and my poor clippers did overheat a bit. I must remember buy a spare set and send those ones off now :o
