Someone is leaving our gate open at the yard. Twice this week my husband has arrived to find our mare running up and down in the corridor between fields. People are being quite unpleasant and bitching in corners but it wasn't us that left the gate open.

There are two horses per field, all of the other fields have a simple gate to get in, ours because of the way that the fields are arranged has a piece of string to separate the horses from the gate so that other people can get their horses in and out. Everyone knows that Daisy does not respect the piece of string and crawls underneath it but until now they have been fine with this. There is no way she could be in the passageway unless somebody left the actual gate open.

Why would you leave somebody else's gate open? All kinds of nasty comments are being made about Daisy being dangerous and upsetting other horses but we aren't the ones letting her out. Most horses would leave their muddy fields for a nice grassy pathway if you leave their gate open.

What do I say to YO? She saw OH when he arrived at the yard and casually mentioned that she thought Daisy might be out??? Why, if she was out did no-one catch her or at least shoo her back into the field?

(Aside from this I love my yard, it is pretty much perfect, moving to getting away from whoever the nutter is isn't an option)

move fields? Speak to the YO and explain the situation or keep a log of what happens and who incidents occur with. Not much help I know, but sounds like someone is just being petty but it can get pretty dangerous if they are leaving gates open. Doesn't sound like a responsible person to me.

I guess that others need to come through your gate to get in and out of their fields? Is that right?
Can you put a sign on the gate saying please keep the gate closed?
Can you change the string for electric tape, will she repect that? I know its not really a solution but at least she will be safer if she stays in the field rather than in the walkway.

I agree - ask to move fields as obviously your horse doesn't respect the tape if the gate is shut and her being loose is a danger to both her and to others potentially.

YO sounds a lazy plonker for not getting your horse in when she's 'escaped'.

What sort of catch is on the gate. For example most of the gates over here are the tubular steel ones which bolt into a slot in a concrete gatepost. However if it is windy, these can 'open' themselves or they are fairly easy for smart horses to open. We always tie our gates at home as well, old headcollar ropes with the clip cut off are good for this, and the gate onto the road has a chain and a padlock needless to say.
I hope you get to the bottom of what is hapening. As you say, any horse can be crafty if there is tempting grass available.

One other person has to come through our gate. I did think of putting a sign on the gate but I just don't think its her. She's incredibly safey concious about these things. You shouldn't really need to put a sign on a gate that quite clearly is keeping horses in.

I can't change the string for tape because there isn't electricity up there and I don't see that I should have to buy a battery because someone is letting my horse out. No-one else has to pay extra and the livery isn't cheap. If I have to then I will but I'd rather try to find out who is letting her out.

Someone left the tackroom unlocked on Monday night and we're being blamed for that as well as having an 'escaping' horse. If somebody wants us to leave they should say it to my face

maybe take the time to watch out if you can. If someone is doing it then they will eventually be caught they can't escape forever. On the other hand, who would risk the dangers of a loose horse enough just to be petty or nasty? Anything could happen to a horse lusting over grass! The YO should wake up and take more responsibility for the people and horses at her yard therefore under HER watch!

I would certainly explain to your YO that it is not you who is leaving your field gate open and you suspect someone else is opening it. Also ask that if she sees that your horse is out she catches her or asks someone else to catch her. Just try and talk to her about it, I hope everything works out well for you

We have the same prob.....as fields interlink....and we know who does it,and I tell them really sweetly........then they still do it......so given up as worn out asking......however if my cob wants to go anywhere he has been known to jump a gate.......not done it for awhile......it is a difficult problem I would have a chat wth your YO and see if there is away round it Good Luck!

This is something that your YO needs to clamp down on immediately!

Every individual is responsible for ensuring that a gate is closed and secured properly, but the overall responsibility for safety and security is the YO.

The YO should make it plain to all his liveries that this behaviour won't be tolerated, and anyone caught doing it will be asked to leave immediately with no notice.
