Living by Railway Lines

Hi there, I would like to ask if any members live close to railway lines and have stabled horses on the land. We are considering a property as above as its within our budget and already has a manege, however the sound of the passing trains is of growing concern. The previous owner has lived at and ran a livery yard from the property without any problems for 23 years but I would be really greatful to here from anyone else with such experience.
 
It depends on how much the noise is going to annoy you, I've lived near a pub, dual carriageway and weir and all eventually become background noise, but I grew up from those environments so to me they're the norm.

Also super secure fencing will be a must.
 
I think it will likely annoy you more than the horses.

I have visited 2 yards with my horse, one had trains up an embankment behind the stales and the other on the XC field (well, beside it!).

My horse was suitably astonished at the first couple, then ignored them. The owner of the livery yard said all the liveries got used to them, even so close and up high. She thought it was because they make a noise as they come, do the same thing every time, then go again.
 
Thanks for you reply. We have sat outside quite a few times now and I think like you say it will definitely become background noise. We also watched a couple of horses that are in a paddock at the other side of the line (sad I know but just wanted to see their reaction to a passing train) and tbh they were more interested at the strange lady staring at them!. Also, will certainly ensure VERY secure fencing!! 😊
 
Is it a electric or diesel line? I have lived by both and kept horses by a diesel one. The horses never blinked an eyelid even when trains went over as we passed under the bridge.

The drawback with living next to the diesel is we were on an incline so the engine was working hard and you could really smell the diesel and there was a black film on everything. We weren't near a road so must have been the train. It was a quiet line so only 2 trains an hour. A big plus is the steam train went through once a month.
 
My horse and I just spent the weekend at a farm where a main line runs basically right through it, the house, stables, school etc are all just above the tracks. I was more worried about what my horse would think of them than he appeared to be about them. Saying that, you had to cross a bridge right over them to get to the xc/sj and farm hacking and we didn't do that but we will next time. I stopped noticing them trundling by on average every 20 or so minutes after the first couple of hours. The people who live there, and the horses, seem a very happy and content lot, so I would definitely give it a look if I were you!
