Afternoon all!

Regular poster, but created a new identity as all is so up in the air at the moment, my Husband has been offered a job in Rolle Switzerland.

Neither of us have ever been, so first things first is to book a trip!
Just wondered if anyone has lived there, and kept horses/dogs? How does it differ? Just help really 😂

I live in neighbouring France. Switzerland is pretty expensive (understatement), but hopefully the salary package should match! Switzerland has some decent laws about welfare, so horses can't be kept alone and most have access to outside, so things are improving a lot. Although sometimes, the access to outside is just a terrace to a stable! The Valais is one of slightly cheaper areas to keep horses, as is neighbouring France (Pays de Gex) so it will depend on where you're living exactly - whether in Rolle or more to either side. DIY isn't really a thing, it's pretty much part. I might be able to be more specific on things if you want to say whether you want comps, turnout, hacking etc. I think you'd need a professional to sort the importing as it's a headache (and that's people who've imported France to Switzerland, which is probably easier).

For dogs, I know you can't import dogs with docked tails or ears, even if it's not you who did it. You can get specific import advice on dogs here (in English): https://www.blv.admin.ch/blv/en/hom...eren/online-hilfe-hunde-katzen-frettchen.html and here https://www.blv.admin.ch/blv/en/home/tiere/reisen-mit-heimtieren/hunde-katzen-und-frettchen.html

Rolle is very beautiful!

Oh and you need to get a pet owner's certificate if your dogs are more than 25 kg and taller than 56cm. And you need a special licence to bring in more than five.

Luckily Dogs have full ears and tails!

I was worried about turn out options, not looking to beat the world, just have the horse as a big pet - love hacking is that a big thing? I'm seeing lots of yards have indoors?

We've looked at budgeting cost of living as double what it is here, which the new wage should cover! Looking at it as an opportunity as well as financial.

It's definitely improving for turnout - if you go further to Valais, neighbouring France or the Jura it's probably easier. Most places are individual turnout in paddocks. Be sure to ask if they have genuine all-year turnout as some places such the paddocks when they're wet . Although again more places with all-weather paddocks for winter.

Yes, most places have indoors as it gets very cold in winter and it's tricky to ride otherwise. For good hacking, a friend of mine used to be at stables in Versoix and the hacking went for a good way in the Bois de Versoix - it's a good five or six years since her horse retired though, so not sure what it's like now. If you end up living in Geneva, there's a number of stables with good hacking near the Bois de Jussy.

Feel free to ask for more specifics if you narrow down your search area later.
