Hi all,

Ive just moved my IDxTB to a yard where he will be stabled at night and turned out during the day. He is still living out at the moment in quarantine but will get his stable soon.

This will be a big change for both of us as he normally lives out. When he's out in winter he is usually in a Med weight turnout. Will he need the same weight in a stable rug?

Also any tips on making the stable somewhere he enjoys being?

Thanks

Is he a hot or colder horse generally? How sheltered is his stable?

I tend to go up the rug slightly with my boy at night when he's stabled - although he's a hot horse, his stable is pretty exposed and cold. Plus, he can't move around the stable to warm himself up as he could in the field.

Has he been stabled before?

My biggest tip would be to make sure he has enough forage overnight - you'd be suprised how many people's horses have an empty net at 8pm at night! I aim for always some left in the morning :)

He is generally quite hot however like yours, his stable block will be outside. It's sheltered but I imagine quite cold through the night.

He has been stabled before but not for years and with his last owner.

Thanks for the tip on forage. I'll go over what I expect and see how much is left

I would try the MW and maybe add a fleece if you think he is cold. My IDXTB gets 2 huge haylage nets and 1 smaller net per night, he always has some left over which I like in case staff cant get to the yard at their normal time to turn out etc.

Agree with layers and plenty of forage (unless there's a medical reason why not).

My boy would often wear a lighter stable rug than a turnout because it's sheltered above the cow shed and the cows generate a lot of heat so it can get quite warm in the barn overnight.

You could get him a treat ball if you wanted or there are licks etc available.

If everything else is coming in, he should settle pretty quickly. I tend not to change the warmth of rugs - indoors is marginally warmer and much more sheltered, which cancels out the not moving around. I err on the side of caution with forage - several nets to start until I see how much is scoffed; as long as it's netted it shouldn't be wasted.
