living out 24/7 and clipping

mine is chaser clipped as get really hairy and hot he is out 24/7 in a LW Wug at the moment - but he is a hot chap and is prone to weight gain and is on good grazing.

he will wear his LW until he starts to loose weight (in my dreams!) or it gets very cold or wet. last year he wore his HW Wug when there was a lot of snow and it was going down to -15C at night which is what i call very cold.

i also have a MW rambo with no neck which he wears if it just cold eg going to be about 1C at night.

however he does not get clipped after start of Dec and the worst of the weather is normally Jan and Feb by which time some of his coat has also started to grow back. he does have access to good shelter though in his field and we have excellent winter grazing.

One of mine is full clipped and the others are high blankets, they live out, all in rainsheets 24/7 at the moment as it is too warm for anything else, the rainsheets are simply keeping them clean for riding otherwise they would be naked during the day, it was still 17 degrees at 6.30pm tonight. The most they have worn is 200g rugs in the snow last yr and even then one was too hot so had to downgrade.

My lovely cob has always had a trace or blanket clip and lived out 24/7. She has always been an exceptionally good doer so back home (in the cold, fairly dry north east) she never had a rug on, and has always been toasty and happy. Since we moved to South Wales I have had to rug as the rain is so bad, but she literally has an anorak with no filling to keep her dry. I do have a medium weight for her this year incase she drops weight but hopefully won't need it. I would rather not clip, but as she stays in work through the winter, I don't like turning her out wet, and it seems a good compromise.

My two cobs are having blanket clips tomorrow, both overweight and live out 24/7. They will have lightweight rugs on until it gets really cold. Last year they had 200g rugs on and were clipped when it was minus 12 and were living out in the snow quite happily. I will strip graze the rest of the grass we have throughout the winter and they can stay out unless it gets really wet.

Both my boys live out 24/7

Im hoping to get fat boy clipped at the weekend, as he sweats BIG TIME i mean dripping, so the lot is coming off and he will have a medium weight rug with neck ;)

My old boy wasn't clipped or rugged at all last year not even a rainsheet due to being out of work and continued to get fatter thru winter  He will also be clipped this year and will probably get a blanket clip & medium weight rug as he is working 2 or 3 days now and also sweats big time

my two are both fully clipped and living out 24/7 shiny and carrying slightly more weight than i would like and toasty warm in 200gm full neck turnouts. will, of course, add heavier weight rugs as the temp drops, but they are both fine and seem to prefer being out all the time!
