Taken from the BBC news website, and it was in the paper yesterday I think:

"The bad behaviour of parents has led to junior classes at an equestrian event in West Sussex being cancelled.

Organisers said Junior and Pony Masters classes at June's Derby meeting at Hickstead showjumping course would not go ahead following rows last year.

Director Lizzie Bunn said wet weather last summer forced junior classes out of the main arena, leading to "very unacceptable behaviour" from parents.

"As an organiser you have to make some unpopular decisions," she explained.

"My father started Hickstead nearly 50 years ago and I've actually been running the show for 21 years and I've never had to witness the scenes that we had last year," the show secretary said.

She said last year's bad weather led to "two of the wettest shows on record" and in order to save the ground for the main classes, junior classes had to be moved out of the international arena.

"Our team was working tirelessly, literally around the clock, just to keep the show on the road... all round the rest of the country shows were being cancelled and we were doing our level best to keep everything going."

Mrs Bunn said she appreciated the disappointment and frustration of parents, who had put a lot of time and effort into the shows, but "you do not expect the backlash that we had last year".

She said she had now decided to replace the event with a Young Rider group for 18 to 21-year-olds.

"We just hope that the slightly older children know how to behave a bit better." "

There was a Whittaker comment about this in H&H this month - the opposite of Bunn's opinion - saying that Ring 2 (Horseware Ireland Ring) should be used for kids...

Saying that, they are normally in ring 5 for the 128/138 classes, and I have never seen riding like it. Anyway, check out the comments page in this months mag.

I read the article in H&h AND CHEERED - its time someone got tough with these *******s. Stewarding and most work running shows in these countries is done by volunteers and if competitors and their connections cannot be civil they should be shown the door. I have had a couple of experiences of rudeness and aggression by people who are just too selfish to care or even notice that people are giving up their time to run shows so that they can come and compete.

These sort of parents take all the fun our of sports and just care about winning and I feel sorry for their kids.

I could rant on this topic all night - GRRRRRRRRR.

Just wonder if the slightly older parents do too.... ?

Right thing to do IMO, if they cannot behave, and from the whittakers letter it sounds like it was the pony selectors also throwing weight around, then they dont get to go. Were the pony's the only class in that arena?

The Pony Masters is usually in the International Arena, but got moved to Ring 2 (still a VERY nice arena i might add) to preserve the ground for the Derby. If we're talking about about a £9k Pony class or the £120k Derby and associated television rights etc...well, no contest.

Glad the pony brigade have got their comeuppance tbh...and hope the Young Riders can be a little more appreciative of the efforts being put in to support them
