I need to move my horse to the Trafford-ish area of Manchester for a month in August. Does anyone know of anywhere that might have spaces? Carrington are full.
Hi, theres quite a few places actually, i've kept my horses in trafford for years and know of a few yards.
Theres Dainewell on Carrington Lane, and before that on the same road, North Cheshire or 'Ackers'.
Theres The Hollies further down, going into Partington.
Theres loads in Urmston & Flixton area - Lafferties, MEC, Robinsons, Meadowgate and Hudsons.
I know Hudsons is geldings only though.
And theres Ashton Hall in Ashton Village, but it was in the news recently that a few of their riding school ponies were accidentally eletrocuted, so you might one to forget that one.
What kind of Livery are you looking for? Like stabling and turnout etc?
x
Do you have any contact details for these places, because there's nothing on google/yellow pages.
It's for 4-6weeks, turnout is a must. DIY or grass livery, with the option of putting him on part/full if we go away. We're living in Flixton, near the meadows. I know my OH doesn't want to be anywhere near partington! What is John Shaws like? My horse is young and I know they have SJ clinics so I was thinking that might be good for him - lots of training and lessons whilst we are there.
If you have a car, the livery yards tend to be of a higher standard if you drive into Dunham/Lymm/Altrincham. There are too many horses for the amount of land at most of the yards around Carrington. Also a lot of barb wire at some.
Have you ever been to John Shaws? however they have a high turn around of horses - so they might fit you in for just a month, I'm sure some people love it there but it's not for me.
Alternatively pop to one of the feed shops Robinsons would be a good start in Urmston (not to be confused with the superstore) they will have a notice board and a good idea of where to try in the local area. Also try Irlam there is more space full stop out that way so you'll get more for your money
Ps the hollies is only slightly closer to Partington and you don't get any trouble (but the turn out isn't great)
Yes there is definately a limited amount of turnout in Urmston/Flixton/Carrington area plus most of the fencing is poor, barbed wire/tape as well as low quality electric and wooden fencing, mostly broken. If you are looking for high quality then travelling further afield is a must as it just doesn't exsist in the area you are looking for as Flame_ said. I don't know about yards in the Dunham/Lymm/Alti area though, all I know is the prices rise steepy the further out you go and then of course theres the petrol costs on top but if money is no object then I would advise driving out to have a look.
Also as Ladylina83 said if you visit Robinsons Tack Shop on Meadowgate Lane (it's right opposite the Lord Nelson Pub) theres always loads of adverts about grazing and livery in the area.
I personally have been on a few of the yards I mentioned, including the Hollies out towards Partington and never had any trouble from kids or scallies or whatever.
I have to say though most of the yards I mentioned before are all of the same pretty low quality but I've managed on them.
It depends how much you want to spend and how far your willing to travel, plus what kind of quality are you looking for.
I think the best thing to do would be to visit the yards yourself to have a look around rather than ringing up, because then you get a good nosey around and you can look in all the stables and talk to people of the yard etc.
If you live in Flixton, the yards I mentioned are no more than ten minutes away by car.
Hope my blabberings were of some help.
If you want anymore info just ask. =)
It's a difficult one because we are only going to be in the north west for 4 weeks, living in Flixton. I don't drive, but my OH does. I'd like to avoid the whole M60 rush thing, and so really the trafford area is the only option. It's not worth keeping him further out towards Altrincham or to a posher/better yard miles away when it's such a temporary measure, because after 4 weeks we're moving again to the midlands.
I'd just like somewhere pretty close, it doesn't matter too much about whether I like it (as long as it is safe etc) because we won't be there long enough for it to be a problem!
John Shaws quoted me the same as everywhere else I rang - £37pw inc hay.
I know where Robinsons is, but I'm in the opposite end of the country right now so I can't go there to look at the board (lol). It's all having to be done on phones and internet, so I can't go to look around anywhere either. I can try and see if we can get a spare weekend before we move to drive over to Mancs, but thats iffy.
I'll see if I can find some contact details for the Hollies, thanks! Carrington sounds ideal as it is 5 mins walk from the house, but they're full
Thanks!!
p.s. all I have been doing is typing "livery in manchester" in google maps and ringing up where ever comes up.
Call up Robinsons they are helpful and have a small yard of their own
Or North cheshire riding school which is close to Carrington riding school 01619731672
Or the Big 3 0161 7483499
Doubt you'd be walking to Carrington Riding center its at least a 20 min walk from the main road and thats after you've got down Flixton mile road. you need to have a drive around. You know word of mouth is the best tool - or leave your horse where it is for 4 weeks on full livery? I wouldn't move mine for such a short stint
I should be going to the Trafford Centre in the next few days. If I do I go past the Hollies, if the number's still displayed I'll take it down for you. I kept Flame there years ago. The owner's a nice bloke.
It is a bit of a faff, but I can't leave my horse unridden on full livery up here (north east) because he is young, injured and being brought back into work so he needs regular exercise as part of the rehabilitation.
My OH has been offered a job with a large company, but they haven't told him where he will be based yet, so we have to go to his mother's at Flixton in the meantime whilst we wait to hear from them (as the contract on our house here runs out in July)! It could be upto 8 weeks we are there. Most likely we will have to go to Derby after. Bloody ridiculous, but a jobs a job and all that.
