Loading Fly - So naughty

Had lesson today and have to admit didn't sleep well worrying weather Fly would load or not. The last time he injured himself resulting in 2 weeks off (slid down side of ramp and took all skin off) and £400 of vetinary treatment!

Started to load at 10am (lesson at 11am, 20 mins up road). No way was he going on. Kept it low key, didn't push issue with whips and such like, just kept walking around, and around, and around!

50 mins in, cancelled lesson, got Harry ~(2yo buddy) and loaded him first time. Fly calmly walked up ramp and started munching hay!

HOW FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So............

next week, got indoor showjumping, do I take 2yo and leave on lorry (is that fair)?

or

Do i not go?

Ummmmmmmmmmm,

After seeing one of his demos, I bought a Monty Roberts Dually halter which came with a DVD on how to use it. I watched it a few times and had a session with the horse (non-loading) then a quick 2 mins with it before loading and hey presto straight in. Works like a dream and we've never looked back.

They're expensive - about £40 for a head collar but it is a good quality piece of kit that washes well and has nice shiny brass metalwear.

I have a ex-racer- absolute nightmare to load when we picked her up from the yard, followed the parelli idea of loading now she walks in by her self she's a dream!!

Concept is to praise every movement towards loading but if they back off-it doesnt matter-but start lunging them at the bottom of the ramp and ask again, if they stand on the ramp make loads of fuss aslong as they are looking towards the lorry/trailer.

The idea is they associate pleasure by goin into the trailer and work if they dont go in the trailer-most horses with the right kind of mind would rather have pleasure than work!

dont use whips or ropes to push them in that just makes it very scary and a whole lot worse, he's proven that he's not scared when he'l happily stand in when your 2yr old goes in!

Start practising, i played with mine as often as possible to get her happily loading and it works
