My horse is awful to load, hes better if i load him in the trailer every day, like walk him through the trailer! i would do this every day only problem is I'm only 16 and i come from college straight to the yard and my parents pick me up after i'm finished, so they can never hitch the trailer up to the car.. so i can never practice, unless.. i put the brake on and just load him through the trailer without it hitched up.. but i don't know if this is safe???? or i could maybe put a brake on the wheel if i buy one.. so the trailer doesn't move when he walks in.
 
It's supposed to be absolutely too dangerous and unsteady to load anything in a trailer which is not hitched up. If it is balancing on the jockey wheel the weight is too much.

Maybe you could build up underneath the trailer, if you're not planning to use it for a while, with breeze blocks, or wood, or something, to make it safe and supported.
 
To practice loading our youngsters at work we put bricks under the end of the trailer so it can be left on the yard without being hitched. Its a very lightweight trailer though, might not work with a normal trailer, and you would have to be very careful about making sure its safe because if it tips up you are well and truely buggered!
 
I was walking through the yard and there was an unhitched trailer opened and without thinking I thought it would be a good idea to just walk up into it! As we walked up and into it, it see-sawed

Thankfully I had a sane horse and we just backed out of it......won't do that again!!!

Now, even for training I prefer to have the trailer hitched. Is there anyone there who can hitch up to your trailer. I really wouldn't advice training in an unhitched trailer.
 
Ive often wondered about this although Ive been told or read somewhere that you should never do it. My horse is terrible in a trailer and I just thank god I never tried it unhitched as he freaked inside, the whole trailer bounced and the prop stands which I had lowered ended up more or less up again but still fastened tight. It was hitched to the car, I put the brake on, lowered the jockey wheel and the prop stands just to keep it as stable as possible but the weight of a horse especially a frightenned one made no difference.
