hi all

i put an ad up a few hours ago, to loan out my friend's horse. as she is a quirky little TB, i made sure i put a 'sympathetic and experienced rider' was wanted...

within 3 hours, i've had a variety of messages... one of them said they liked the sound of loaning a horse, what did it mean exactly, and perhaps they'll have a few lessons first.... another simply said 'would you let it move to *insert town 300miles away*?' andd another one said merely 'can i go to shows?'

is it me, or have some people lost the art of selling themselves? if i saw an ad for a horse i wanted to loan, i'd send such a load of waffle about myself, what i could offer, what i was looking for etc... that they'd probably have to have a nap halfway through reading...

but no, i've had a handful of messages... most with less than ten words...

but i don't want to word the advert any more harshly, cos i don't want to scare of potentially perfect people... grumble.

*pauses for breath*

grumble grumble

I think i can clarify the "can i move it to xxxxx"

I spent the whole of last year trying to get a horse on loan and after a while of pretty much arranging the whole thing and the owners dropping the bombshell of "by the way the horse has to stay on its current yard" despite me clearly saying in my ad and conversations that i could only have a horse to live at home or a place of my choice as we are nowhere near any towns etc....! so in the end the first question i asked before really getting into any discussions was "would i be able to move the horse to my own stable or a livery yard close to me"
There are so many people looking and so few people loaning now i think thats why people send short and to the point messages.

Also the shows thing is because loads of people are offering shares....but the sharer cant go to shows.

Really hope you find someone nice to loan your friends horse

You're not alone! I recently sold my mare & had the most bizarre replies to my for sale ad. My favourite was would I part ex her for a caravan? Would I meet someone at the beach to see her?

I kept re-wording my ad in the end - absolutely no loans, no part-ex, excellent trial facilities at current yard etc.

Was mightily relieved when she sold & I didn't have to deal with all the weirdos anymore!

Good luck with it :)

I can see from both sides! I know if it were me I'd send a big waffle of information on me, my yard, what i would like to do, my care, my experience but other people want to be straight to the point and more business like. It wouldn't stop me from contacting them (regards the distance one) to hear more but some messages like you've described do sound a bit odd!

The replies could be alot wierder trust me. I was selling some dresses and shoes for my sister online and I got some very odd texts from a guy with a shoe fetish, and then some guy sent me a picture text of his bits! Some people are mental!
The messages do seem a little abrupt and lacking in finesse, but as I say, they could be worse! :-)
Good luck with the search.

When I was looking for a loan horse I was telling people all about me, my experience, what I what to do, type of horse I'm looking for, I can give references from owners of previous loan horses etc etc!!

I've been putting up adverts for a horse to buy. I thought my advert was very clear about what I want including height, age, type etc, nice all rounder that I can go out this summer and start competing, lots of hacking etc. And I get replies asking me if I want a 10 year old unbroken TB (I don't want a TB, never the less an unbroken one), 14hh BSJA ponies (I need about a 16hh!), Ones that say they need to go to a home with a school as they are too dangerous to hack, when I have clearly said I don't have a school and mainly hack!

The last one wanted me to buy her horse but can she still come every day and ride it.....umm so you want me to buy your horse, pay for it's keep, and then let you ride it every day instead of me...no! I think I might be taking my adverts down :)

There are some weirdos out there :)

Where have you posted the add?? When I advertised my ISH i got all sorts of replies, some sounded really genuine some really not and some that you can tell are kids that clearly hadn't disscused it witht their parents, you just have to pick through and decide who's worth replying to and who's not, I was very blatent and honest in my add and i still got stupid questions.

I think some people just want to try thier luck to be honest. I had a few calls for my mare (I'm loaning her out) and i reckon cos she's got really good breeding (jumbo) people thnk they're getting a superstar bargain when i've specififcally stated she's done this or that and not been round Badminton!

Ditto what BayJosie said :)

Also... sorry to hijack the thread! But how is Raff clipcloppop? :)

he is hunkydory... (is that still a word, or am i living in the 80s?)
friday will be 6 weeks since the accident. and he's having his 'half-way-through-cross-tying-x-rays' so we're hoping to see it's all fixed. he'll still have to have another 6 weeks of being crosstied, but, he's coping very well so far.

i clipped him (left his legs on as never clipped before and didn't want to cut off a leg... he's only got 3 useful ones at the moment... didn't want to deprive him of another...) because he was very itchy. i guess he isn't getting the sunlight on him to tell him to shed his coat properly. and he's had a couple of nice baths too.

he's lost SO much condition, but that's to be expected as he's not moving at all.

all in all, i'm so very proud of him. and am very very glad he's coped so well.

xxx

I wouldn't give them the time of day, can't understand why anyone would leave messages to be honest, If I wanted to loan a horse and saw one that suited on a advert, I'd be ringing up and talking direcly to the owner, not leaving one liner messages over the internet, it just encourages time wasters that have nothing better to do than sit dreaming up questions and wasting peoples time when half of them don't have clue what there after in the first place.

Nothing wrong with asking if the horse can be re-located though but again surely you'd ask this once you have rang about the horse etc.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll find the right person eventually, before you pull all your hair out :D

I've sent a message rather than calling to a loan advert today (gelding), for the simple reason that I'm stuffed up with a cold and have a hacking cough. I'm only likely to manage a few sentences before having a coughing fit!

Not normally sickly, its probably the stress of my Connie's illness and pts. But, if i was loaning, I would be very dubious about someone who didn't sound too healthy on the phone.

No doubt there are also folks not allowed to make calls at work.
