I would like to get a companion pony for Archie and wondered if it would be a reasonable request to ask whether, in the event of illness, the owner would pay insurance or vets bills.

On an idyllic farm location, I am willing to do everything else, care for a pony, lots of love and fussing, walks out in surrounding countryside, daily management including feeding, haying, feet trims, etc. It must live out though 24/7/365 but would be taken to the stable yard on a regular basis for grooming. It would be treated as Archie is, except would be a non-ridden companion. It would need to be left alone, whether it is in our stable or in the field surrounded by other ponies when Archie is ridden, perhaps a couple of times per week.

Do you think someone would be interested in the home I could offer but help with more of the serious finances that may present themselves?

I'm not sure- we'd need our pony shod every 5 weeks, and you would be expecyed to pay (she's crippled without shoes- miles too sensitive, the pathetic pony!). Um, depending on the pony's previous injuries- if you knew she had suspensory damage, you'd be expected to be able to care for her. However, we'd help out a bit. Some people may have different ideas though, but imo when you take a pony on, you take on all ownership responsibilities without the deciding power.

I have not had a horse since my old boy passed away last october. but realised I was missing them far too much. We have a local lady Lynn Friel who runs the Crosskennan Sanctuary and does the most amazing job, she is actually getting horses and ponies dumped at her yard! I rang her up and then went and saw her, anddddd on Sunday Romy and Sonic arrived. They are both in their late twenties, and have never been seperated and I cannot tell you what joy they have bought to our house already. Ring your local horse welfare group, they will be delighted to find you a companion for your neddie, and you will be making a poor neglected horse or pony so happy. Please try them, it makes so much sense, as the sanctuaries are going to be under so much pressure this winter...Good luck and I hope you get a lovely person, the way I have done.

Why not describe it as

Free grass livery for retired/non-ridden pony in return for companionship for Archie, my xxx (description of Archie), at an idyllic farm location. Your pony will be cared for in a home from home environment with lots of love and fussing, walks out in surrounding countryside, daily management including feeding, haying, farrier visits arranged for feet trims, etc. Your pony must live out though 24/7/365 but would be taken to the stable yard on a regular basis for grooming, and would be treated as Archie is. Must be able to be left alone at times (perhaps twice a week), whether it is in our stable or in the field surrounded by other ponies when Archie is ridden. Owner to insure, pay for suppliments (chucked that in as some can be very pricey!), farrier, vets bills etc'.

I would think you'd get a suitable pony offered, as unless they have their own premises to keep a non-ridden pony at grass would cost them a good £50 a month plus in your area I'd imagine (round here just a field is about £70+ a month)

Sounds lovely, wish I had a pony to send you!

I used to loan a mare. It was a permanent loan but her owner paid her yearly insurance. So I paid for any basic vet requirements but was always covered should anything big arise

Marble - Have just completed several application forms for rescue centres, so fingers crossed.

Wildwest & Morrigan Lady - I am in Hampshire, along the A3 corridor, near Petersfield. Idyllic farm location with bridleway from my gateway into surrounding forest and more bridleways.

May I add, it doesn't have to be a non-ridden companion, I have an 11 yr old daughter who rides but the chances of getting a very safe pony with an owner who is willing to assist with vets bills is, I am sure, out of the question. But if you have one ...

Hi,
I look after a cob who we have just decided needs to go on Loan as a companion - he may be right for you?
The situation is as follows....... I've shared him for a few years now but after a stifle injury which means he can no longer be ridden I went and bought my own horse. Now his owner has had a little baby and is struggling financially and has therefore offered him to me, however I can't afford the two, although I am happy to keep looking after him. Therefore we made the decision (only tonight by the way so I'm a bit teary) that he's got to go on loan as a companion.
He is approx 15 yrs old 15 h irish cob and an adsolute gentleman. He can be left alone in the field and stable o.k. and will live out. Do you think you would be interested?? PM me if so. I'm sure his owner or even me could come to some arrangement re the vet bills.
I'm based in petersfield by the way and he currently lives just down the A3 in blendworth x

You are not asking too much at all. Someone who gets to be Archies companion is one lucky horse (and owner!!)
I have recently moved my horse to be a companion for another. All she asks of me financially is BHS gold insurance which is only £57 a year. She also wants commitment, (which i am more than happy about!) so i go up 3/4 times a week to say hello to my boy and give him a groom. I also have to pick the poop from the 4 acres where they graze which is a bit of a bummer!!

I have might have the perfect pony friend if your still lookng. Daisy has a very sweet temperment, total in your pocket pony,, has good ground manners, has been worked on the lunge line. She would be great as a companion pony. Great with people and other animals. I unfortunatly have to leave in April to work and cannot bring her. But will take her back when I come back in 5-6 months. If your interested please let me know:)

We have a 15.2 hands thoroughbred gelding, 19 years old kept at a yard near Brighton but originated from our house in Haslemere. My daughter still lives near Haslemere and would love to have him (Dante) re homes as a companion in that area. Petersfield would be perfect. Dante is regularly re shoed but is not ridden, has some rugs but is brought in at night.

Please let me know if your interested.
