hi
sorry the the long explanation but want to make your you get all the facts.

i have my own fields but they get boggy in the winter and so the 5 acres that in summer easily copes with 9 horses, have never been grazzed in the winter.

i have 2 acres of it with my mare on and that is split into 3 sections so i can roate for the 8 months shes on them.

the local riding school rent the rest and is split into two 1.5 acre fields and they put 4 horses on each and this goes down to 4 or 5 on all of it as the grass stops growing.

this works well and my horse is happy with the company of the other horses, however i dont want to move her next winter as she doesnts like the being unsettled and i dont see the point when its free to be at mum and dad (im still at home).

so does anyone recon you can get a low maintance pony or easy to handle horse to live out (with field shelter) on winter loan or maybe perminant loan.

i am confident handleing but dont want to have to fight with a horse that would be a pet for my other horse. also could this be free or who pays who as id be loaning or borrowing the pony but they would be getting livery from me.

ive thought maybe rescue centres would appriciate having a pony of their hands for a bit but i dont no.

and before anyone says it, i dont think the RS would be cooperative enough to lend me one pony and i dont really want they to be able to take it away.

any suggestions greatly appriciated

Well I don't know where you are but I have a retired horse here in Scotland who could suit that purpose. He could be on long term loan but I wouldn't expect to have to pay his costs in that situation. However I am sure if you advertised you would be inundated with people looking for a good home for an unused horse or pony, as they are hard to find.

im in lincolnshire. sorry scotland is a long way away, however thanks for the feed back

wouldnt expect people to pay livery but what i dont want is the cost of a retired horse who needs medication. i dont mind giving medication or feed but i dont want any major costs. i would pay for trimming and basic feed but expect the owner to pay for any bute etc as otherwise i may as well pay the £25 a week livery for her to have a school and move yards for the winter.

That's a fair enough point, its a pity about the distance as my horse isn't on any medication and is perfectly healthy! Just a bit quirky to ride and I don't want that any more as a mother of three!

There are poeple out there that I am sure would be prepared to loan just for the winter. I have a pony out on loan at the moment as light hack/companion due to injury. When we advertised him last year we had a lady take him on just for the winter to keep her yougnster company as she kept it with another, but every winter this other horse goes on full livery so she needed a companion. She paid for everything on him, but we supplied all his bute & paid his insurance. He has since come back as it was just for the winter months & we have now found him a loan home to someone we know who wants him perm which is better for us & again we supply the bute etc.

Hope you find something suitable :)
