I am picking up my horse this weekend, I am having him on loan (with a veiw to buy) for a max of 2 months. I am guessing I have to take insurance out for him for the two months?
Also I know petplan ask if you loan or own the horse, but what would happen if I take insurance out under me loaning him but them buy him less than a month later?
Thanks

All you would need to do is contact them so they can update their records & amend the premium if they have to. If you speak to them when you take out the insurance initially they will be able to advise you.

You don't HAVE to take out insurance for a loan horse, it's up to you and the owner to decide what's best for both parties. But it is sensible to try and protect yourself somehow whether by insurance or by the wording of the loan agreement. I've just been trying to sort this out with a pony I'm loaning as a companion - PM me if you want and I'll tell you what I've suggested!

When I had a horse on loan I opted to pay my insurance monthly. I used E & L who I know have a bad reputation but when the horse proved unsuitable and I sent him back after 4 weeks they sent me a cheque for the first months payment when I cancelled. The payment had actually been debited from my account the day before and I hadn't expected anything back so I was pleasantly surprised when I was told they would be giving me a refund!

Usually horse rider insurance only covers horses that you do not have for more than 4 weeks. With the NFU Mutual you can take out an annual policy and have the loan person noted and if you purchase the horse this can then be removed. If you cancel the policy after 2 months the outstanding premium would be refunded.

Vicky thanks alot that is very interesting as I was considering NFU as I use them for my car insurance (as do my parents).

Sunnymane I am pleased to hear you were happy with their service I had considered them but I have heard bad things about them.
