Loan horse

Hi, I just wanted to get other peoples opinion on our situation. We have a pony we are loaning, we are very fortunate to have our own place and it has moved to our home. In the contract they stipulated that they wanted to ride a couple of times a week to keep on top of the ponies fitness. We don’t mind this, the pony is in light work and probably needs the extra work. So here is the dilemma…

They have only been up once in 3 weeks. Also another family member is riding her and it came out that they are using this as a trial period to see if they could handle having her on loan.

I’m a bit concerned since there is no financial contribution and what would happen if an accident happened on my property? Or something happened to the horse? We are responsible for all medical care.

What insurance cover does the pony have eg is it insured or do you just have public liability?

It is fully covered for vet fees and death but if they injure her whilst riding would we still have to cover the bills?

Sounds to me you are being used as free livery. You keep the pony at yours and are responsible for all medical costs they, or family members, can come and ride a couple of times a week. I suspect if pony was injured when they were riding they would just walk away. Not sure I would be happy with that arrangement.

Yeah, to start off with we thought it would do the pony good to be in more work but the more we see and look into it the more we feel that they are using the situation. Now we just need to figure out how to address the situation x

Just tell them it’s not working for you. You want full and sole use of the pony or they take it back.

Disclaimer here in that I’ve never shared or loaned…but wanting to ride the pony a couple of times a week doesn’t sound like a loan in the first place?

If they won’t give sole use and the pony meets your needs, could you offer to buy? If not, I think I’d move on and buy another. It can’t be nice having an insecure arrangement where you’re unsure where you stand.

What a good deal for the owner! No fees or jobs and ride when they want or let others ride! This is not usual OP. Sole use or send back.

Ps I don’t think it matters if the horse is insured or not, they could still claim off you and if you don’t have yard insurance that covers other people riding it could be very costly.
