well my loan horse is safely back with his owner, all went well apart from taking an hour and a half to load,so everyone is happy and ive been told i can go ride him at his yard as he still needs to be kept fit,so all good and no bad feelings !!
but i keep getting told that horses go out on loan as most have problems and owner cant sell them, but i dont think all loan horses do !!
also im sure you can get sucked in when going to buy one and you bring it home and it turns in to satan !!!
anyone else had good or bad experiences with loan horses ??

I loaned a horse last year. There was nothing wrong with it. I simply didn't have a horse to ride, and this one was sitting in the field not doing anything.

My experience was very good.

exactly i know theres alot of genuine horses out there !
but get put off when people say this !!
also i suppose after this experiance thats also worried me a bit,i will just have to be more vigilant when looking at others
cc is that your boy on horsemart ?

We loaned out my daughters outgrown pony. I suppose you could say she had problems in that she is quite a difficult ride and needs a competent child, but the reason we loaned her was because we didn't want to sell her but didn't want her sitting in a field doing nothing. At the moment I am trying to keep Murph fit whilst daughter is at university, but if for any reason she decides she hasn't got time for him he will be put on loan, purely because we would never sell him. I am sure there are plenty of genuine loan horses about so I wouldn't give up.

I think thats a pile of rubbish! there is nothing wrong with my horse, and i dearly wish that i didnt have to put her out on loan, but i am off to university and therefore cannot keep her with me. so, ok it is because i can't sell her, but the reason i cant sell her is purely sentimental and selfish, because she is such a dude!!
Dont be put off loan horses! There are an awful lot of success stories to outway the horror stories you hear!

i have a horse on loan and he is a saint! he isnt daft or a nutter! His owner was having a baby so i had him and 2 yrs later i still have him and would have him forever if i could!

I have been looking for someone to loan my horse, not because he has problems but because i have two and an ill mother and a full time job and just need some help. Not all horses up for loan are nutters that cant be sold many are people who dont want to sell them but need some help..

We are loaning 2 ponies out at the moment, the shetland because my sisters have outgrown her and it's not fair on her to be stuck out in the field for the rest of her life. We won't sell her because we rescued her and she was the kids first pony. Also a 13.2 because she won't jump and that is what mysister wants to do, the pony does have some problems but the loanees are aware of these.
We have on loan in place of these a caspian pony, no problems with her but she will go back to her owners for breeding in 2 years time when my sister will get a bigger pony. Her owners didn't want her sat in field doing nothing. Also 13.2 new forest for other sister that was rescued from the meat man and his owner does not want to sell him because of this, no problems with him either.
We have had many horses and ponies on loan from different people and never had a problem with any of them.

I've loaned a horse for the past 17 months - he's an absolute gem! His owner has two and not enough time to give both the attention they deserve. He is NOT on loan because he has problems and can't be sold - he is 26 and his owner has had him for 20+ years and would never dream of selling him on at his age to an unknown future! So, she has put his needs first and found someone to loan him, love and look after him under her watchful eye and she found me!!

She can now watch on and see him happy and healthy and not feel guilty that he is sad and doing nothing, still have a daily input in his care but not have the worry of not having enough time to do it all herself.

Atm I couldn't afford to buy and keep a horse all by myself so its a happy outcome for all concerned!

when i was pregnant a few years ago i advertised my sec A for loan and i had a few phone calls but i couldn't do it!!! i know i was selfish but he's my baby!! i have someone ride him now, and myself if my other horse loses a shoe etc... theres 2 sides to loaning horses though, you hear of some horror stories of what the loaners have done to the horse so it put me off!!!

I hate it when people say most loan horses are useless. My mare is going to a hacking loan home this saturday, she had a injury that only means she can't jump to the level i want to do so i thought i'd put her out on loan as she's a fab hack, easy to do and deserves one to one attention.I couldn't bear to sell her.A prospective new horse is being vetted right now in fact and it's a youngster that i will bring on slowly and hopefully compete when it's up to it.It suits everyone really, the home my mare is going to is great, she will be very spoiltl.I'll be getting a horse i can go out and have fun on and jump etc and i'll know my mare is being ridden regularly.I could of kept my mare but she wouldn't of had the attention and work as much as if she was out on loan.I think i did what is best although i will be sad this saturday as it'll be wierd her not being with me but i'll get used to it and i'll go and visit her regularly of course.

hi vieshot
we have our own yard i was looking for a horse to keep here as there is a lovely stable with big squishy bed waiting to get mucky lol and six geldings that want a new friend they are all so laid back theyed fall over lol

I have had two extreme experiences with loaning horses.
Both horses were recommended by friends. The first one was 19 and had been evented to a high level – previously owned by Terry Wogan! I had him on loan for 4 years from the age of 19 and he taught me so much. The only reason he as for loan was as they had had him for many years for their daughters and they grew up and moved out but they didn’t want to sell him as he was part of the family. Unfortunately old age kicked in at 23 and he started to suffer with arthritis and so now he is happily retired in the field at their home.
I then took a horse on full loan that was 12 years old and had previously been evented by Matt Ryan, he was a really nice horse but unfortunately the owners had not understood the importance of fitness and he was irregularly evented whilst not fit (grrr) - unknown to me - but I took him on and 2 weeks later he went lame, so after speaking to the owner we took him to the vets for investigations, where quite quickly I was recommended by a trusted vet that there was nothing that could be done to make the horse sound and so much to my despair he was sent back. The owner insisted there was nothing wrong with the horse, and that I was overreacting – I then heard through a friend just under 1 year later that he had been pts due to his incurable injury.
Its luck of the draw, but after my second experience I would definitely not take another loan horse without having a full vetting. And always make sure you have a good written contract.

the poor horse and what sounds like a stupid owner !!
as he then suffered for nearly another year and doing god knows what !!
oh yes contracts are one of the first things i mention to safeguard bothe parties as it did with me when i had to tell owner i could no longer have him !!

I think in a LOT of circumstances it is true that horses are only loaned out due to the owner not being able to sell them due to their problems, but there are exceptions.

My loan horse is golden with a lovely temperament - the type you can do pretty much anything with without him complaining! His owner loaned him out because she didn't have the time or money for him as she has another horse who she events, but couldn't bring herself to sell him.

I would say less likely to be problems in loan horses because an owner still has responsibility unlike someone selling who can wash their hands of it!

I would love to find someone decent to loan my horse hes a lovely lad i just don't have tiem to ride him and he's getting fat

My daughter had a lovley horse on loan two yeras ago and he was a star no problems with him so there are nice loan horses out there
wink.gif

We've put Spud out on loan, theres nothing wrong with him unless you count being a cheeky naughty pony! He was just being fat in the field and he's gone to a young girl down the road who makes a fuss of him and gives him the attention he deserves!
smile.gif

I don't agree - I think I'd loan Ty over sell him if I had to due to money difficulties.....I wouldn't sell him unless it was a last resort.....

He did have problems but he's turning into a nice all rounder now.
