Well from my previous post about my lads loaner out of the blue saying she could not afford him.
She had emailed me on thursday saying she couldnt afford him anymore as she had split with her boyfriend. this was fair enough with me as these things happen. was a bit put off she'd emailed me as opposed to phoneing. I only had her ex number as she hasnt got a phone?!
So I emailed her back on thurs straight away, no reply. so since thursday I have been worrying sick about him. So we decided to go up in the trailer to get him today. I text the number I had for her ex to say were picking him up today, thinking maybe the message would get through to her. didnt want to turn up totally unanounced.
Well was so glad I did. We got there, he was on his own in a TINY paddock with old garden furniture, chicken coup and rubbish, all over grown. His mane covered in burs, soaked through heavyweight rug, really really long feet splayed with one loose, it has slipped and punctured his sole.
Theyve lost his new horsewear lightweight rug.
I am so angry, he is such a sweety and does not deserve this. It took me 2 hours to get the burs out and theyve been in there a while, he was so sore underneath them. He just stood there with his head down so I could reach bless him. he has a thin afro now so much mane had to come out.
I really dont get the heavyweight rug thing? I'm guessing because theyve lost his light weight they thought they'd put a ****py cheap leaking rug on him, so he was steaming hot and soaked through.
But the most upsetting is his feet. I asked her when he was last shod- she was umming and arring and said hes not due for 2 weeks! i hate lying! I know the farrier so I'll ask him. its been at least 12 weeks I think, his feet never grew very fast, and never got loose shoe he had great feet. In the contract it stated every 6 weeks for shoeing.
My friend had a spare saddle so I went to try it on him so can start riding him when his feet are sorted. He really didnt want me to put it on, moving away throwing his head up, nothing bad, but hes such a good boy its not like him at all, hes started to grow a bit of white mane on his shoulder and his coat, I'm thinking hes had a badly fitting saddle on. this is horrible thought, especially as hes had an injured back in the past.
When I got back to the car I had an answer machine message from her ex saying I can't go over today as the girl isn't home, which was a lie as she was there, I'm thinking they didn't want me to see him in th state he was in.
Hes now at a friends yard where hes being looked after. I'm thinking of keeping him and my new lad at full livery, it'll be expensive, but I can't put him through that again. either that or loan from yard only.

sorry just needed to have a rant as i'm so angry I let someone treat my baby boy like this.

poor boy, at least he is home safe with you now. This is the reason I will never loan one of mine out, perhaps a share from the yard but with lots of supervision from me, nobody will ever take them away from where I can see them daily. Just be glad he is safe now, and send her a bill for the lost rug! I hope he is soon back to being himself x

I can totally understand where you are coming from. Iv had 2 loans go very bad so never again. Selling is just as bad, I sold a lovely young ex racer who my young son could ride and thought I had found a loving home for life, 8 weeks later I had a phone call saying she had split from her partner, had no car so couldn't do horse, pay for him etc so I said I would buy him stright back. I heard no more until a rescue center rung me to find out his history ( I write my phone number on all my passports so people can contact me) he was in a very bad state but lucky they had him where he will now stay and I go and visit him. So in a way at least he was on loan and you could get him back. But it's horrid how some people treat horses.

your poor boy but at least hes in good hands now and back in your care. i hope you get your boy back to the way he was when he was with you.

this is the reason i wont loan out - my old pony went out on loan to a family who literally thrashed her into the ground. shed never had a days illness in her life and within a matter of 5 weeks she was lame. i took her off then and suffered abuse for it (good job i didnt actually care what they said) my pony suffered the rest of her life with stifle and hick problems and in the end had to be PTS. I wish wed never done it.

I know there are good guys out there that loan but it seems to be the bad ones that make it so people wont loan.

That is so awful! I feel so sorry for you and your poor horse :(. At least you have him back now and he is safe.

I just wanted to add however that not all loaners are bad. I had my horse on loan before I brought him and I treated him like he was the most important horse on the planet ( well to me, he is!). I spent lots of money and time to look after him the best I possibly could.

It's such a shame your loaner was so bad. She gives others a bad name.

At least it's all over now and you can move on :)

God I'd be absolutely livid if I were you.
I just don't get how someone could do that, I'd like to put her in shoes that are 2 sizes too small for a few weeks and see how comfortable she is. And while I'm at it I'll lock her in a sauna and see how she enjoys sweating all day. Grrrr.
Ok so she can't afford him anymore, but why not tell you in a timely manner before his hooves are overgrown and uncomfortable, that doesn't happen overnight!
I have been loaning a mare for a year and I love her as if she was my own. I can't imagine ever allowing her to get into that state, and if I lost my job in the morning and couldn't afford her my first call would be to the owner to see what could be worked out for the horse benefit and best interest.
People baffle me sometimes. Good on you for going up there to collect him quickly, it's great he's back in good hands.

I really feel for you, and atleast he's back with you to get all the TLC he needs, a similar thing has literally just happened to a friend, and even i'm struggling to cope with how he must have been treated.

Many hugs to you and your horse

xxxx

You are right to rant! People like that consistantly give loaners a bad name - not all are bad! Thank goodness he is back, safe and comfortable with you again. What an unpleasant situation for you both. Big hugs xxx

It annoys me when people do this as it ruins it for the genuine people out there, i loan my daughters pony as she cant bear to part with her first one!!
I treat the pony i have like a little prince just as i would do my own, and have just got back from a good visit from her first pony!! She looks very well looked after and all her stuff is in good nick, in fact theyd just picked all her winter rugs up from been reproofed and cleaned as shes kept out so they play a very important part in the winter.

I hope your poor boy is feeling better very soon, and i know from this experience that you wont reloan him and i can understand why but there are good loaners out there too.

I can't believe how many people this has happened to. Feel so sorry for people this has happened to, as you give people your horse in good faith, thinking your doing best by them. I feel so guilty I gave him to such an awful person.
I remember before I bought him I looked for a loan horse, after a month of looking I bought him as I wanted one asap. I remeber thinking as its not my horse I would look after the horse so well.
I started to worry slightly a week before she emailed me. A girl from the yard asked me how he was, she had only just realised he'd gone (its a big yard!). I told her i'd loaned him to this girl. She looked shocked, she said she had really bad hands and a horse she gave away to a friend was always really skinny. I saw this horse when I looked around the yard before dropping him off, it looked light in condition but he was old so I put it down to that.
(the horse she gave away to her friend was on the same lad as my yard, the yard is at her mum and dads house).
Well when I told the girl from my yard we had gone and picked him up and he was in a state, she said she wasnt shocked, she emailed me a link to a forum with photos of this horse on, in the winter, he looks so thin! Then I looked at more posts, there is a story of my boy being tied to a fence, that horse tied the opposite side of the fence, they went for a walk and left them. They came back to my lad halfway over the fence and to two of them going at each other, so they sprayed them with a hose to stop it  who in their right mind ties two horses together, let alone leave them!
They said they would ring yesterday about his rug (well her dad did, she didnt have the guts to come out and talk about it-I imagine shes too embarassed giving a horse back in that state) No phone call, I'm down an £80 rug. I'm thinking of going over today. I need the money to buy him a new one, as hes had a heavyweight on  he'll be feeling the cold at night now.

Sorry to read about this.Id be fuming. She had the pony on loan yet she neglects irt Gerrrrrr

I had a similar problem in the late 80s.

I remember one of my ponies was put on loan,it turned out that the girl was not looking after him properly my friend took him back,,luckily she was local to my friend ( I was working in germany at the time) and my friend then found a fantastic home for him,who eventually bought him and kept him for life.

I would be tamping ,I can understand why your very upset and annoyed.

this is a photo I took yesterday. Imagine this but all down his mane and in his tail.

his feet, the one on our right is the one that's punctured his sole. Luckily weve caught it soon, its polticed and not hot. They don't look as bad on the photos as they acctually look.

Oh yes and please excuse the chipped nail varnish!

That is so disgusting  The only good thing she did was to tell you she couldn't have him anymore. If she hadn't, what kind of state would he have been in a few months time. Doesn't bear thinking aout.

I am so pleased for your horse that he is back with you.

:)

Oh dear thats terrible.

I am afraid I had an experience of the other way round. I wanted a horse on loan and to cut a long story short found one. He was skin and bones and at a riding school that was closing down. Anyway, he had not been wormed, had been stabled most of his life and had no idea how to be tied up, groomed or ridden properly. I loaned him and the people I loaned him off would come and see him every month, I managed to get him fit and happy. Anyway one day they came to see him and said they wanted to sell him but not for a price I could afford. :(

So my point is there are good and bad owners and loaners out there, hope your horse is ok.

Poor boy!! :(
Hate people like this, how can they treat someone else's stuff/animals like ***** ? This scares me so much because I am looking for a loaner for my horse!!! :(

Don't be put off by bad experiences. There are still great loan homes out there.

Get references if you can (from their vet if possible) have a good contract drawn up with a clause saying you will visit on a bi monthly basis and if any concerns you have the right to take him away without notice.

I am sure you can find a great loan home for your horse :)

These sort of stories frighten the bejasus out of me as i have a girl coming to look at 1 of 2 horses of mine to loan.
My fright is the horses will be going a few counties away so wont be able to pop in as often as i would of liked and now reading these stories is making rethink about loaning.

Similar thing happened to a horse I loaned out, a few years ago now. Loaned to a couple with their own farm, lots of buildings and fields, she owned other horses, all seemed ok. I kept in touch regulally even going visiting . Then I got a shock, my horse had developed mud fever and the loaner refused to keep the horse in a stable at all, even for a few hours a day. She is a "natural horsemanship" advocate and says horses shouldnt be stabled. Vet was called and treatment and advice given. Loaner just wouldnt keep the horse in! Then there was a rapid downhill development and I brought the horse home. It took 9 months and hundreds of pound of treatment. Infact she was so bad we nearly lost her. Vet was absolutely livid, not at me,but at the loaner. All this was before the new Animal Welfare Act. I would have prosecuted the loaner had this been now. To this day the loaner blames me! apparently thinks that I had tried to pass on a problem horse. Unbelieveble.

I can't believe how common this is.
you think people who are into horses must be animal lovers. But she was a teenager and I'm thinking he was a phase that got boring and she didn't want to bother with anymore. Not having a jibe at teenagers in general. I'm not old myself. The fact she got her dad to deal with it as she couldnt face me was annoying, shes 19. I think if you think your old enough to look after a horse (or not in her case!) you should face up to your responsibilities.
The vet is out tomorrow to look at his foot, it was hot tonight and lame. Would you hold them financially responsible?
