Hi everyone :)

I was wondering if you'd be able to give me an idea how much contribution I should ask for from the loaner of my pony.

He's 14hh, 19yo, done everything etc..the loaner will come and ride him 5/6 times a week and she will be mucking him out most days, and also some poo picking of the fields etc...he will be staying at the current livery yard with my other horse.

I've never loaned a horse out before so this is all new to me!!

I will be grateful for any suggestions :D :D

Add up your costs for a week and charge them 5/7 ths of it. As its a share not loan I would take insurance out of the question. If money isn't a problem then maybe lower the figure if you find someone you like who is very reliable.

I agree with the above. Decide if farriery is included in that price or if thats seperate, ie pay half of shoes. Its really down to your circumstances. In my experience in the current climate, you will struggle to get more than £25 a week. There are 3 people on my yard looking for sharers and they have all asked for £25 a week with no interest. One lady is now accepting £60 a month. But it really does vary!

I personally have never done it so there will be others that have a clearer idea but it would also appear to vary on where you are, and what is the norm for your area.

A popular way around me, especially if the sharer is doing a decent number of days and the work on the days they ride, i.e. mucking out, turning out/catching and poo picking, is to charge for the cost of shoeing and standard vets bills (worming/vaccination). Someone told me that they'd also worked it out at roughly £60 per month.

thanks everyone :) I was thinking of around £15 a week, so £60 a month! But wasn't sure :) he's barefoot and only ever needs a trim every 12 weeks or so! Livery is £25 a week, i get my hay free, bedding is roughly £7 a week but sometimes less.

Thanks for the help!!

sorry, another question......do people have share agreements, similar to loan agreements?? Lol, I've not done all this before, and I don't want it to all go wrong!

You can look at it 2 ways, she is more or less full loaning the horse and should pay majority of the costs but have a say in how things are done etc, or that she is providing nearly a full livery service for you and you should pay her!! ... I'd say £15 a week sounds fair which ever pay you look at it :D

xx

thanks Oedemitous Camel! I was thinking £15 a week was reasonable :D

another question sorry...what about insurance? I have him fully insured (vet etc and public liability) with myself as a named rider, do I add her as a named rider or ask her to get her own insurance?
