Hey guys!

Please can you let me know if you share a horse or loan a horse, and how much you pay and how often you are allowed to ride the horse? Also are you happy with your loan/share? Sorry for all these questions, just looking into different possibilities. Thanks so much! xxx

I have loaned 3 horses at different times. I had to pay all of their keep. However it was like owning the horse and i became very attached to them. I have never had a horse taken off me by the owner, always choose to give them back because i had grown out of them etc. I have always been happy with the agreements.

Most importantly, draw up an agreement that you are both happy with. You need to cover yourself in all eventualities. My horse has been attacked by another horse, and it has crossed my mind that if she had been on loan, how would I explain it to the owners. That is extreme I know, but just make sure you are covered if things did go wrong, good luck.

If you loan a horse, you should pay for everything. Livery can vary so much, so can't really put a price on it. I pay £250 a month, £25 a week livery, shoes, insurance, feed, bedding, hay, wormers, vacs, teeth, etc. If you share a horse, then a contribution should be sufficient, say if you were riding 3/4 times a week, then half the bills. A contract is a must though, can't stress that enough.

I have my current horse on full loan. I pay for everything so it is exactly the same as having my own horse bar paying a lump sum up front. I pay for livery, shoes, vets fees, feed, hay/haylage, tack, lessons, insurance.... I have him 7 days a week until further notice and TBH as the owners haven't been to see him in 9 months, he may as well be mine.

Yes, I am happy with the arrangement though I would quite like them to occasionally phone and see if he's still alive!

Yeah right, why would you buy a horse and then never be botherd to see how he/she is? Wierd! Thanks so much for the info guys, i think it will have to be share or part loan for me. xx

I assume that response was aimed at me? They didn't buy him, they bred him but they have over 100 other horses (polo and stud farm) and just didn't have time for him. They put all of the riding horses out on loan or sold them and just kept the broodmares and polo ponies. I speak to them every now and then, they like to hear how he's getting on, but I just assume they trust me to look after him.
