Loaners (Im so fed up)

I have posted on here before that my TB gelding is out on loan as I am pregnant the girl who took him on was told in no uncertain terms that he was spooky before she took him on but she insisted that was fine she had ridden for Martin Pipe and could ride most things but didnt like buckers which he doesnt do.....anyhow she had him on trial for a month great wanted to sign the docs as she had won a dressage comp on him and he was fab!!!! 2 weeks later she wants to send him back as she finds him too spooky, I am really fed up as I cant ride him far too big for him at the mo, I might have somebody interested in buying him but the loaner is bringing him back on Monday and has just texted me to say he has lost a shoe no idea how long it has been off and she cant get a farrier out to put another one on....so I am getting back a horse that hasnt been ridden and is completely footsore and minus a shoe.......is it me or does anybody else think this isnt on? I must add he went with a complete set of shoes, in excellent condition all vaccs/worming up to date and it is stated in contract everything must be kept up to date and said horse shod every 6 weeks.
 
What did your contract with her say? Did it state she had to give you notice to bring him back?? and in what condition he was to be brought back in??

Understandable that she cant get a farrier out so soon, but I would maybe ask her for the money for it.
 
It's an unfortunate fact of life that (many, not all) people don't look after other people's horses the way they would their own

Neither do they put the same effort into getting to know / work with a new horse they can send back at any time within a given period.
Those are the pitfalls of loaning though. Hope you find someone suitable and responsible for your boy soon!!
 
Sounds like somebody just wanted a horse for the summer holidays..... Is she school age or a teacher by any chance? You might be better off turning him out until after you've had the baby or have him at your yard & find a suitably nice horseless teenager to come & ride him from there. I sent a jumping pony out on loan once only to have him come back 2 weeks later as a pony that was scared of jumping - to this day I haven't found out what happened to him but once he got home he was soon jumping BSJA course again with a small but competant jockey on board!
 
Thats the problem Panda I am scared of how he is gonna come back to me, he is a sensitive soul and I was/ or thought I was quite careful about sending him out on loan she isnt at school or a teacher she is a polo groom but something doesnt ring true about the reason she wants to send him back as she says its because he is really spooky but to be honest I am not the best rider in the world and I can ride him and did up until I got pregnant! I am now too scared and fed up to want anybody else to mess him about if you understand me?
 
Sounds to me like she is spinning you a complete yarn. Especially if she is a polo groom, I have polo ponies and if you can sit to one of them doing a 180 or 360 then a little spook isn't going to have you off! sounds like she might be travelling off with the polo season to either Argentina or NZ for the UK Winter! Oh and if she really is a polo groom then her getting hold of a farrier shouldn't be a problem mine will come to me same day if I need it!
 
I ended up selling my pony because I found the only kids who had the ability to do a decent job of riding him had their own ponies & didn't have the time to ride mine. Sometimes you can find decent people who will share a horse with you but again you have to be very careful. It's so frustrating as you wouldn't have thought it could be so difficult to find a nice person to ride a lovely horse. If you have been put off other people riding your chap then I would def. suggest you turn him away until you are ready to ride again. There is no point in giving yourself undue stress when you are preganant!

I'm a little confused that a polo groom would be concerned about a horse being spooky. I did a season as a polo groom & half the playing ponies were psycho - quite strong, often temperamental & good at bucking. If she can cope with all that, why should a nice allrounder that ocassionally has a little spook worry her? I think you should be grateful that your horse is coming back, hopefully in one piece, without any more damage being done to him by this girl.
